Time for another beer run, have a question

a local small shop carries it here in Columbus, Ohio. But while they don't have a insane selection, they do notably try to stock the more famous craft brews and imports.

iirc our local big box liquor store carries it.

yup, just pulled up the label and its the one I'm thinking of.

if you can find them

sam smith's imperial or oatmeal
mackeson's xxx
sam adams imperial

if you are new to stouts sam smith's imperial or oatmeal is a good one to start with, as is mackeson's. old rasputin is a good beer, but not something I'd recommend to someone new to that style of beer. I'm not a big fan of young's or guinness but they are worth a try.

Young's?
go into a wannabe Irish pub, and ask them for the stoutest non-Guinness beer that they have.

Best stout I have had is Porterhouse Oyster Stout. Don't think you can get it outside Dublin though. Not much help is it?

I wish there was such a selection here... I have been to a microbrewery before but they seem to be few and far between and most beer in the stores here is the typical crap you see everywhere (bud etc)

Double Bastard Ale? I don't like it too much, but it's definitely dark. I'd much prefer Sam Smith Oatmeal Stout.

If you can, get Ten-Fidy. It makes guiness look mlike it has a nice tan.

Ten Fiddy is an amazing beer. I love Oskar Blues. Designed to be consumed out of a can.

Stone Imperial Stout is great as well.

Look for Russian or Imperial Stouts.

You also may consider strong ales, like North Coast Old Stock, it's 13% ABV and great.

Sammy Smith Oatmeal Stout is fairly common at many of the grocery stores around the midwest. It's usually in a 4 pack though, not a 6 pack. It's a very good, dark, rich stout. A little more mellow & sweeter and less bitter than Guinness Extra Stout.

I was going to post this.

also, if you can find it, this:

this has become my standard safe value purchase at Safeway, these days. the pint bottles run around 2.30-2.50. six packs are harder to find though. most big distributors will have them. The Spaten Dunkel is awesome, too.

Oskar Blues is awesome. now I really want some Ten Fiddy....

nothing like opening a can of Dales, the aesthetic expectation of consuming a shitty canned PBR, and being greeted with cold, hoppy, awesomeness.

oh...there are great, maybe greater stouts out there these days; but for my money, and maybe because of the sentimentality, the greatest stout available and probably my favorite beer anywhere, remains this:

Another props for Old Rasputin - I've purchased it in TX, so perhaps it's on the east coast.

It is. You can generally find Old Rasputin in Trader Joes, but plenty of alcohol emporiums would have North Coast stuff. they have pretty long distribution.

Old Rasputin is tasty.
