The only experience I have with any of the cars would be servicing them. I prefer to work on both Hondas and Toyotas, but never had much trouble with a Mazda product. Good Luck on your decision.

Your friend must have gotten some kind of company leased car or one with a salvage title or something because retail on a '99 LS400 is about 28k.

Yes, I know it adds nothing to the debate. ;)

How about an SVT Contour?

those are actually really nice cars but certain people refuse to look at it because of the badge on the bonnet

When it's MY money, I have the right to be choosey :D

Your loss :)

Just curious, but why you don't want a Nissan? You don't like the brand or you don't like the Nissan that fall in your price range?

I guess I would say:

Mazda Millenia (it was supposed to be a near luxo after all and it has horrible resale value)
Accord
Civic
Legacy
Protege

I guess I would personally try to find a Millenia. I think reliability wasn't too bad. Dunno if you will have difficulty finding parts in the future tho.

We have a corolla (2000) and I don't like it that much. Steering is waaay to light and the brakes feel spongy.

I just don't like the designs of Maximas or the interiors of other Nissan cars. If I don't like what I'm going to be sitting in 90% of the time I'm with the car, I don't like the car.

Your car already is worth crap. Just drive it into the ground, then get something else.

just because the car is in good "looking" condition doesn't mean that it can't have a salvage title.

Anyone remember that Simpsons episode where they go to the moneysavers presentation? "All those beautiful women? Well, they used to be men!"

It's better to get $5,000 now and put it towards a newer car than to get pidgeon sh!t 5 more years down the road :D

On our used car lot there's a SWEET 2000 or 2001 Accord EX 6cyl with leather, CD, power this-n-that, moonroof...for about $18k. Low miles. I'd love to be able to get it myself :) It's a Certified pre-owned, too...eligible for extended warranty and such.

Perhaps but if you set aside the $300-$350 a month you'd be making in payments now...In 5 years with interest you'd have $19 - 23k cash to pay for a new car. Also you wouldn't lose that much, KBB says a 1990 LE (Equivalent to your 95 LE 5 years from now) with 156k is worth $2990 private party. Add that in and you'll have $22 - 26k to spend.

5 years from now, my car will have nearly 200,000 miles on it at the rate that I drive it. And repairs start getting more expensive as you creep higher and higher in the mileage. At 150,000, the timing belt is going to need to be changed again. Who knows what else may need to be replaced/repaired after that.

If I can trade it out now, I'm going to do so.

Wow, that's inverted to how a lot of people act - wild when young, boring when older. But hell, all that means is you're going about it the right way. I drove crap for years (1981 Chevy Chevette, 1972 Ford LTD, 1976 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, 1979 Olds. Delta 88 Royale, 1989 Nissan Sentra, 1990 Nissan Stanza, 1991 Toyota Tercel), now I have my Challenger awaiting restoration and a nice new Hemi Ram for actual use. ;)

I know what you mean about interior affecting whether you like a car or not. That's what you have to live with when you're using the damn thing - that's actually why I like Nissans, I tend to prefer their interiors over, say, Toyota's.

You arent gonna get 5k for it. MAYBE $4k if you are really really lucky. You have a toyota, not a honda. Your car doesnt pull the prices a honda pulls.

You would be best with a 5th gen accord(94-97). For about $10k or less, you can get a 96 or 97 EX 2 door coupe with a manual. I have a 4th gen accord(93) and seriously, ask any accord owner, these things last forever. Oh, and you said you dont like expensive VW parts? Have no worries, accord parts are cheap. There are probably more 5th gen accords on the roads then every VW/Audi combined.

Yeah, Nissan interiors have never been a big selling point with me. Sentra compared to the '03 Corolla...there IS no comparison. I also like the '02-'03 Camry and '98-'02 Accord interiors over the Maxima interior. They just "feel right" to me.

I drove around in a sh!tty '87 Pontiac Sunbird for 4 years (my first car). The interior was horrid. When I stepped up to the Camry, it was like being in luxury:) Ever since then, I said that I wouldn't punish myself again with cheap interior materials or crappy feeling HVAC controls and instrumentation. The late models Sentras and Altimas I have been in are pretty much "rental quality" when it comes to interior materials.

As for my fondness for "boring" cars as the others have mentioned. I'll stick to what is efficient and economical at my "early" stage in life. I prefer getting 30-40MPG than to get .90G on the skidpad right now.

Why would I buy another "old" car? '94-'97 Accords are going to be high mileage vehicles. If I were to buy a '94-'97 Accord, I might as well keep my Camry. I'm looking for something '01 or newer.

Also, if you can find a '95 Camry LE with as many features as mine (listed in the first post) for $4,000, then more power to you :D

Heh, I got the '91 Tercel (previous car before the Ram) for free from my parents because my dad bought an '02 Acura TL, so my mom got his '95 Camry, and her Tercel was available and my Stanza was dying. I asked if he wanted to give me the Acura instead since he was never a big car guy, always drove old used cars into the ground, so he probably wouldn't appreciate the Acura like I would. He said no. ;)

because a cherry 5th gen accord is better than a newer one. Cheaper insurance, lighter, better gas milage. You can get them with low miles. A friend of mine just got a 96 EX with 60k on it. These accords go 300k no problem. Mine (1993)is at just over 130k and it runs way better than my friend 96 corolla(79k). And he is the origonal owner, and he never has beat on it.

Why spend 15k when you can spend under 10 and "get by" with an older car for a few years, until you are making more money. Hell take that 5k and put it into a nice mutual fund, anything. There is no point in over paying for a newer car.
