It wasn't a secret, but I guess he felt he had to say something about the disappointing direction of some US states, and "coming out" helps when writing such an article. However, if I were in his shoes, I'm not sure I would have used the same wording. I guess he is truly "proud" but most people I know, gay or straight, aren't actually "proud" of whatever their sexual orientation may be. It just "is".

P.S. Off topic: I hope his legacy for new products at Apple is more than the iWatch. I still can't see a point to the thing.

I sometimes think pride tries to counterbalance the original fear of lack of acceptance.

Commenting on your example though, I am a straight guy who was treated "completely differently" by a *** bartender.
It was my first time at a gay-bar/dance club because my gf wanted to go. The first half-dozen times the steward served people who arrived at the bar after I did, I figured I was doing something wrong, as it was my first time there. (It was a large enough bar - and busy enough - me being polite, I thought it might be an honest mistake at first.) The gay men were all friendly with me, but after too long it became painfully obvious she was very pointedly ignoring me. To the point that other random bar patrons started trying to help me. One woman offered to add my order to hers but then backed off saying she didn't want to piss the bartender off and possibly not be served herself. After my lady-friend checked with me twice to see if I had successfully gotten our drinks yet she was so fed up we walked through the crowd to a different counter with a male bartender and were promptly relieved of our money in exchange for needed refreshment.

Anyone with any good sense wouldn't purchase one of those overpriced POS anyway. Regardless if the dude is gay or not.

I never owned an apple product, so there is nothing to burn.

Tim coming out as gay gives me another reason to never buy an apple product.

Russia just dismantled a Steve Jobs memorial on the basis of Tim Cook's sexual orientation. As bad as being gay in the US has to be, I can't imagine just how much worse it is in Russia.
