You hockey fanboys can defend the sport all you want, but the bottom line is that the NHL has suffered a severe decline under Bettman's watch. The strikes, losing the major TV deals, having to contract teams, etc. Ten to fifteen years during the height of the Gretzky era the NHL was actually competitive with the MLB & the NBA, now it ranks as a distant fourth. Anytime your sport bottoms out on Versus or the Outdoor Life Network, something has gone terribly wrong.
no true hockey fan gives a shit about any of that. personally i wouldn't give a shit if the game shriveled up and died in terms of media exposure. those who play and know the sport know that it will never die. did you have a point to your post, or was it just to remind us that most dumb Yanks prefer pretty much every sport over hockey? no major sport would survive without the support of American fans. whipdy frickin doo, NHL is "declining". the only thing missing from your post is a chirp about poker or cheerleading getting more exposure on American TV. who cares?!

for what it's worth the state of the game is great right now IMO.

What a stupid non-issue.

Even the announcers on VS talk about how hardly anyone watches hockey anymore. It's true.

Everyone holds Tiger to a different standard and he can't make comments like that -- it's forbidden. How dare he talk about a sport that is less popular than Golf (hell, that's a pretty remarkable feat right there 😉 ).

Golf has a much wider appeal throughout the U.S. You can find Golf courses all over the country and taking some clients out to play a few holes of Golf has a much greater appeal then suiting up and hitting the ice for MOST Americans.

OK, now what if Gretsky said, pft, Basketball. No one watches basketball. Before a damn stat was thrown out you people would be screaming he's a racist.

Now I think we can all agree in that baseball is the worst TV sport.

I fail to see the diss. All he said was his opinion that not many peope watch hockey. Whether this statement is true or not doesn't matter. He didn't say he didn't respect the sport or that he viewed the sport as being easy or anything. He doesn't watch hockey...so what?

No. Baseball on TV > baseball in person. At least you get instant replay of calls and you get much better view of plays. Definitely a TV sport. I could not stand watching a game at the park. Watching it at home is not too bad.

Golf has to be the worst TV sport. You don't play against other players in Golf, you are besting yourself. Doesn't work as a spectator sport.

100 >> 5.8

According to Nielsen Ratings, only 11.9M average viewers watched this year's Masters tournament.

In contrast, 1 out of 2 tv sets in Detroit and 1 out of 3 in Pittsburgh had hockey on tv during the most recent game. Source

Most of those Detroit tv's were pirated Canadian signals, even though we get better coverage of hockey here through CBC.

Racist? Huh? Hell, I'd agree with him. NBA basketball sucks ass -- but College BB is where it's at.

That being said, Tiger has more pull than Gretzky does or even did.

Anyone see a hockey game in this top 20 list for May?
Even wrestling beats hockey.

As far as how many TV's in Pittsburgh and Detroit that were tuned into the hockey game....WELL, NO SHIT. Their local teams were playing.

Who the hell else was watching?

Hockey has it easy as far as what sports it has to compete with in playoff time. NBA is steadily declining in popularity, or at least it has been. Might have bottomed out and is rebounding (no pun) now.

They don't have to compete with NFL or MLB playoffs. If they did, then damn near nobody would watch it.

As it is, only yankees and Canadians watch hockey now. It's simply not a popular sport outside the colder northern areas, and other than the occasions when a more Southern team is competing for the Cup, (like the Canes a few years ago), it never will be.

Half of Canada probably tuned in. Hockey has always been a Canadian game. I didn't really care for a lot of the expansions the NHL did just because they can. How the hell do they expect ICE to survice in Florida or Phoenix?

At the end of the day, he made a quick dig at hockey and that was that. Anyone who reads what Tiger said as "Anyone who watches hockey is an idiot," which seems to be the reaction people are having, is going out of their way to be offended by an inoccuous offhand comment.

Jonks' link was spot on. These white people, eh? (<- International law requires the use of "eh?" at least once when discussing hockey)

I'm sick and fucking tired of the 'eh' stereotype. Everywhere I go in the US that is the first fucking thing anyone asks me and it is completely fucking retarded. I don't know a single person that says it and I've lived in Canada my entire life.

So stop propagating the 'eh' myth you goddam hosers!

KT

It's not a stereotype, they say "eh" and "aboot" for about all the time. You can deny it all you want but I watch South Park and Matt & Trey have done entire episodes about Canada.

I'm still trying to figure out how y'all heads stay on flapping like that when you talk though...

It is a stereotype. How the fuck does South Park doing a parody of Canadian stereotypes solidify your point? It doesn't.

To the people above that said they hear people say it, well they must live in some sort of hick town or something because I never, ever hear it, except when people are making fun of Canadians.

Best Ratings in 6 Years For NHL Stanley Cup Game 3
May 29th, 2008 by Robert Seidman

NBC is claiming these are the best results for a Game 3 of the Stanley Cup, not the best Stanley Cup rating for any game in 6 years, although it still seems to bode well.

Note the local market numbers: Detroit was set-back by also having the NBA playoff game but Pittsburgh is stealing the Hockeytown USA crown away from Detroit. Almost 50% of the houses with TVs turned on in Pittsburgh were watching the NHL game. If not for the unfortunate timing of two Detroit teams playing on the same night (as was also the case for games 1 & 2), NBC would?ve probably cleared 5 million viewers.

From the NBC press release:

DETROIT-PITTSBURGH EARNS HIGHEST STANLEY CUP GAME 3 OVERNIGHT IN SIX YEARS

Detroit Rating Slam Dunks NBA by
More Than 14%

2.8 Overnight Up 87% Over Last Year?s Game 3

NEW YORK ? May 29, 2008 ? Last night?s Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final on NBC earned a 2.8 overnight rating and a 5 share, the best overnight rating for a Game 3 in six years (2002 ? Carolina-Detroit, 3.8/8). The Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings garnered an 18.2/28 in Detroit, trouncing the Detroit Pistons-Boston Celtics NBA Eastern Conference Final head-to-head by more than 14 percent in ?Hockeytown? (15.9/24).

The 2.8/5 was an 87 percent increase over last year?s Game 3 on NBC (Anaheim-Ottawa, 1.5/3).

NBC Sports is broadcasting Games 3-7 of the Stanley Cup Final in primetime. Coverage resumes on Saturday at 8 p.m. ET in Pittsburgh, with the Red Wings leading 2-1.

Wednesday?s Top Markets:
1. Pittsburgh, 33.1/47
2. Detroit, 18.2/28
3. Buffalo, 6.2/9
4. Columbus, 4.1/7
5. Minneapolis, 3.7/7
gee, imagine that. hockey ratings improving. hmm.

I think we struck a nerve. For what it's worth, yes, it's a stereotype, but it's not even a negative thing. It's no worse than the European who thinks all Americans sound like the Dukes of Hazzard.

"Folks in Hazzard County hadn't seen such blatant stereotyping in a my excellent compatriot's age. Eh?"

Yes, improving from just about NOTHING isn't too hard...and the improving was mostly done in the northern areas. Hockey just is not, and will never be a nationally-loved sport in the USA.
As I said, only yankees and Canadians watch hockey. Wasn't trolling, just speaking the truth.

No NHL Playoff games made the top 20 (but only because of the way we receive data from Nielsen, see below), but expect that to change when the current week?s results are in. The Detroit/Pittsburgh Finals have been a ratings winner.

That could be why? Anyways, who the fvck cares if anyone watches. It's a great game to watch for me, and that all that counts in my world.
