This I was told by my animal park tour guide when I was visiting Australia.

Lions are badass though. Anyone still have the link for that vid set to Prodigy? The one were the big male throws down with hyenas?

Or grizzly. Bears > the rest.

Maybe they just thought you looked like the type to try and hump a koala.

They had this same question on that discovery/learning channel show (don't remember the name). The Lion won based on the following facts:

-Tigers are solitary creatures, and hunt occassionally when they need food. Lions are pack animals; male lions are raised from birth to fight other lions in order to defend their pride and such. Thus, lions would have more experience with a large, ferocious opponent.

-Tigers tend to use a neck bite as their main method of killing. Lions also use the neck bite, but are more prone to use claws as well. The lion's mane would help in confusing the tiger enough to perhaps make it miss its first attempt at a neck bite, giving the lion an upper hand

-Tigers are larger and stronger, but as previously noted, the Lion's much greater experience in combat with other large cats was thought to outweigh this factor. Basically, both cats are strong enough to kill one another with a single bite, or a well-place claw strike. It would come down to which animal made for itself the first killing-blow opportunity. The lion was decided on as the winner.

The polar bears are not so ferocious fighters - they prey mostly on undefended animals.

Bears in general seem to be pretty low as far as the fighting scale goes. That link provided (for the discovery channel page) has them losing against pretty much everything, walruses and hippos included.

The male lion seems to be able to take down just about anything short of the elephant. Guess all those years of practice fighting really pay off.

Not the tiger.

The discovery channel didn't take into account the fact that bears have faced lions before when people bet on them in arenas. The bear won by crushing the skull of the lion in one hit.

I'll take a bear anyday.

A t-rex will kick all of their asses and then some, probably the most ferocious animal in the history of Earth.

Yeah, I remember that from the gorilla-with-knife thread. Those arena fights can't be ignored. I had no idea grizzlies were so badass. Scary stuff!

I didn't say polar bears were ferocious. Temperment isn't the determining factor here, it's what the animal posesses as far as offensive and defensive capabilities. An adult male lion is not going to be able to take on an adult male polar bear and win.

I agree about the hippos though, those are some scary critters. They kill more people in Africa than any other animal I believe.
