TI4200 Toast :(

After a long series of hardware trading, I finally snagged a TI4200. Stuck with a Geforce 2 MX for years, this was a very good thing :)

One day my computer blacked out in windows randomly. It booted back up, but then blacked out again - this time for good. Wouldn't boot back up. I whipped out some extra computers and hardware, and swapped everything around, changing each component.

Turns out my power supply was fried (damn smell is still in the case), and so was my beloved Ti4200! I tested it in three different systems in disbelief. I removed the HSF and looked at the GPU - no sign of a bleeding chip or burnt smell. Then I gave the ram a sniff - same smell that the power supply eminated.

My question: does anyone have any ideas as to what might have happened? Was it as simple as a power surge when my power supply died, and zapping the card? I had five PCI cards also in place, all of which work fine. The motherboard, CPU, and RAM are all fine too. Is there any way to diagnose the problem with this card?

Wish there was a way to recussitate my PNY coaster :( That's the last time I overload my power supply..

Thanks for your help

Actually I did have a quality PSU - a 300 watt Antec. Yes, I know, 300 watts may not be synonymous with quality to many people around here, but technically, the build quality was excellent. I simply overloaded it! Definitely my own fault...I had two hard drives, three CD-ROM, 5 PCI cards, TI-4200, and a T-Bird 1.4 on it. It was able to keep up with everything until I threw the power-sucking TI4200 at it. It only survived a couple months of that abuse.

I'm just confused that the AGP card fried but nothing else did..

Ouch! Makes me glad that I upgraded all my power supplies before I installed the Ti4200's in our 3 systems. Ours weren't as heavily loaded as yours, but still better safe than sorry. Sparkle 350 watt, and a pair of Enlight (High Power) 420 watt units handle the overclocked XP1700+, 512 mb PC-2700, 2 PCI cards, 2 hard drives, and 2 optical drives just fine. If you watch compgeeks.com, they frequently have new Asus 128mb Geforce 4 Ti new pull cards for $99.95 + shipping. I orderd one back in May and again last sunday. Both cards are working great. If you do consider one, don't forget the coupon codes for 10% off on various bargain sites like non-skinny wallet and techb*rgains.com.

i've even seen some ti4200 deals kicking around our forums for $85 shipped. I just put the cash down for an nforce2 w/IGP, so I'll have a low end Geforce4mx to tide me over with old games until I put out for a Half Life2/Doom3 video card :)
