After re-installing XP I can't use Firefox anymore. I've tried removing it and reinstalling but it doesn't work. Freezes up on the start page and and can't click anything on it. I miss Firefox. :(

The IE bashing needs to stop. Honestly, people don't know when a topic has been BEATEN INTO THE GROUND.

It has been proven on countless occassions by countless users that IE can be perfectly fine when you aren't an idiot. The bottom line is, everyone's a fanboy.

About MS's tool, I will get it and try it out if someone can 100% verify for me that I can disable it on startup.

Err....name ONE occassion. I'm sorry, but I just don't believe you.
Do a search and read the tons of multi-page arguments on the topic. It always starts off with someone saying that Firefox rules their life, then other people agreeing, and then of course lots of people saying "You're wrong, shut up, IE is fine."

Basically, if you're n00, yes stick with Firefox to protect yourself. If you're not, go with whichever one your prefer. IE is fine.

I heavily disagree with the statement "IE is fine". I remember freaking out when a friend of mine told me she used ie because she liked how it looked comestically. IE is NOT safe to use. But if you don't care about safety, then go ahead.

Yup, I use IE and came up clean. Haven't run any other scans recently either.

I totally disagree. I just set up XP on a brand new machine just yesterday and downloaded some raid and Nvidia drivers along with JDK from Sun. My machine showed 113 entries of spyware by Spybot and Adaware. I have not used my browser to 'browse' around either.

Use spybot and Adaware and you'll be surprised.

Hay I just shot you in fvcking face now try this really impressive blood coagulant , stops bleeding instantly. Thanks alot Mr.Assailant.

There is a reason why no spyware exists in linux.

Maybe because coders would rather write a piece of spyware that targets an OS that over 90% of the computer users worldwide use as opposed to a relatively smaller group of linux users?

It would also be a lot more difficult to write a Spyware application for Linux. Most Linux users don't run their systems with admin privledges turned on all the time like Windows users do, and Mozilla is smart enough to PROMPT a user before attempting to install a plug-in. IE didn't do a good job of enforcing that until Windows XP SP2 came out.

Your last line implied I'm jeopardizing my safety by using IE. Which, like I said, is not true for a safe geek like us.

Nothing more than a few cookies. Those scans were what I've always used and they haven't turned up anything real in quite some time. I even take IE to a few pr0n sites, heh heh.

IE is safe if you aren't a complete idiot. I ran it for YEARS and never had a problem.

I use Opera simply because it's more functional. :)

if you needed that, then you obviously aren't using service pack 2. i wouldn't consider yourself "up to date".

Windows 2000 service pack 2 has a pop up blocker built in? That's news to me ;)

Amazing... This evil app even went as far as bundling it's own pop-up and spyware blocker, just to keep another spyware company from uninstalling their software :)

Fortunately, I noticed the little system tray icon that it installed before I rebooted, and was able to remove them with a combination of AdAware and Spybot. I don't even want to imagine how badly it would hosed my system if I let all the processes that it installed launch on startup.

Should be more careful when clicking on popups....

So, your definition of an idiot covers doing a search with MSN on a financial topic, clicking on a link, and getting hammered with adware and trojans?

If you cannot do basic internet browsing in IE, then it is not a legitimate piece of software, imo. It has nothing to do with how intelligent you are. I also have run it for years without problems, until now.

Thanks for the heads up, wyvrn. I installed it on the 13th, ran it, and found crap that Adaware and Spybot S&D left behind. Just ran a scan today with this result.

I dont know who everyone has a problem. I run IE and I love it. never had a problem with it. I go anywhere I want to on the internet with no problems at all. I get a few spyware problems every once in a while and I just run adaware and there gone. you people have to be installing some stupid stuff like weather bug, or gator or bonzi buddy! if you dont install that junk, you wouldnt have a problem!!

Yep, when i ran IE, i didn't have a single problem with it, and in all the years, never had a single spyware, even after running adaware and spybot (only things they found were cookies). On my one box i was able to run the new MS antispyware on (my other box, which has been up longer just crashed recently) it... it didn't find a single thing... and this thing has been running for a year.

It's a really good product. I've been recommending to people even though it's in beta. Clean, works great, autoupdates, autoscans, free...love it!
