Anyone tried ThreadRipper with MATLAB and compared to Intel?

MATLAB relies heavily on Intel MKL and Intel IPP and I wonder if those packages discriminate AMD Zen based CPU's.

I really wonder how ThreadRipper fits the Scientific Programming world.

Remark:
This also holds for any Python distribution utilizing Intel MKL (For instance, Anaconda) or R (I think Microsoft distribution uses Intel MKL).
 
Working on 4.3 ghz stable boys! Wish me luck! EDIT: LLC is fickle with this board, that was my biggest issue.

Btw, I found out why my board was throttling to 550 MHz at 4.2 Ghz. You have to disable PROCHOT in Ryzen Master. Otherwise you get throttling. This leads me to suspect that some people may be getting throttled and they don't even realize. The thermal shutdown is actually really low. I found this out with Prime95 @ 4.3. I will try and give exact numbers later, but from my investigation, AMD's whole thermal management solution is a nightmare.
 
It's well known that there are thermal sensors throughout the die, I wonder if some part of the core *is* actually above safe levels in some dense area (avx units maybe) but is not being reported to monitoring tools or is averaged down?

In this case I'd think degradation will be accelerated in these areas of the die. This is just my intuition though, and is probably inaccurate.

I have 1920x and 2 coolers - Noctua NH-U12S TR4-SP3 (full size) and Phanteks ph-tc14pe (smaller cover surface, but 2 towers. I got TR-4 mountings from Phanteks). Which one should I use?

I found a review that lists both on X79. It shows the U12S within 3C of the Phanteks at full load. The full cover plate on the TR4 edition should make enough difference for the Noctua to match or beat the Phanteks.

I believe that PROCHOT is sent before parts of the chip are hot. This is meant to vet the board to throttle the chip. I also believe that AMD may be using PROCHOT for their boosting algorithm. Just a theory though. At any rate, the chip should never degrade from thermals. AMD chips shut down when they hit their thermal limit. Before that, PROCHOT is sent to tell the board to throttle back instead.

No joke, I found a 4500 rpm 120mm fan with a molex connector online. I was tempted to buy 6 of them for my enermax 360 to see how much cooler the system would run (not that cooling with my current setup is an issue, I just like doing crazy stuff). I believe they were $35 each.

Remember to wear steel gloves when working near your PC with these fans on full blast 😀
I had industrial 300mm fan I used to chop carrots and wood in it when not cooling my rad (old Athlon days). It was full 240V AC powered unit, not to be joked with!
 
I was going to mention the fan - had Vantec Tornado and some Delta 80mm screamers back in the day. I use static pressure fans now, EK Vardar, Gentle Typhoon, beQuiet Silent Wings 3. I see Corsair ML fans are popular too.
 
I ended up ordering 6 noctua 3000 rpm fans instead. They have PWM and the current fans that I use (all 6 of them) are only running at around 2300 at max speeds....one of them is not even working right and is only running at 2000 rpm max speeds. The fans for for my Enermax 360 rad and I'm trying to get the temps down a bit so I can do some more insane overclocking. Just praying I don't fry this chip 😉

Could be that you're at the limit for the amount of heat you're trying to dissipate. I looked on their web site, but couldn't find anything on TDP rating or FPI for the radiator. The fan specs look good for static pressure (Noctua has better on paper). One of the things that I like about my custom loops is the ability to add surface area (bigger/more rads). Biggest dislike is cost (time and/or money).
 
So those who have the MSI X399 Carbon board: how do you change the CPU ratio?

Mine is on auto and I can’t figure out how to change the multiplier. It’s not selectable. I can use their prebuilt “game Boost” OC’s and watch the multiplier change but I can’t seem to set anything myself.

Did you set OC Explore Mode to Expert?

I’m irritated. I had a bunch of time yesterday to play with the PC. When I went to google a solution to my problem (which I think is probably due to me not configuring something correctly), I couldn’t connect to the Internet.

After spending several hours rebooting my cable modem, router, and troubleshooting with Comcast it turns out my router was screwed up. We had a lightning strike that morning that set fire to two houses near by.

So I now have a new router instead of an OC on my Threadripper.

(What’s funny is several of my neighbors have been posting on FB how they also lost their routers).

(And yes I had everything on surge suppressors, probably need to replace them now)

Most houses are not grounded well enough to handle a lightning strike. No surge protector will help.

That’s a good point. My wife and I were going to call an electrician to install another outdoor plug and while he’s here I was going to have him check my grounding rod.

I was also going to have him add a whole house surge protector. We’ve been getting a lot of nasty thunderstorms with brownouts lately.

This tripped me up too. It's silly but you just start typing the ratio. The "Auto" makes it look like there should be a drop-down option when you click it, but nothing happens, and there is no visual indication that the field is ready for text input. Good job MSI. 🙄 I'm noticing they have awful UIs in general. I'm still pretty happy with the board itself.

Interesting, I just ordered three of those iPPC-3000 Noctuas to replace the case fans in my 750D. Looking forward to seeing your results on the Enermax.

Lightning hit my parents house and all of their electronics got fried. It actually worked out well for them because they got better replacements. They had a 55" plasma panel and got a 55" 3D TV as a replacement. Their computer was replaced with a laptop IIRC.

All of the power circuits are on safety switches which didn't help. No fighting mother nature I guess. 🙂

EDIT: It also killled their ducted air-conditioning and the alarm system. It was all replaced by insurance but still.....lightning messes stuff up.

I knew [Auto] was a pick list.
I knew some of the other items like voltages without [] you just hit + or -

I didn’t think to just type the damn ratio in. 🙁

So anything XX.25, XX.5, XX.75, or XX Should work? EG. 42.75 = 4.275 GHz?
 
Hey guys, just got my taxes back and am seriously considering buying a 1950x specially because they are on sale right this minute. Right now i am using the system in my Sig for Video and Audio Editing and Encoding.Would it make sense to upgrade to more cores with the 1950x?? Would you buy now or wait till 2950x gets release and how soon will that be?? Also is there going to be new chipset and motherboards coming?? Thanks...
