[Thread Renamed] - The **official** prog-rock meet/exchange fav bands thread.

I think I am a bit behind with music. I don't watch MTV and have no idea what is new or good. I mostly enjoy complicated, progressive music like Dream Theater, Spock's Beard, Phish, old Rush/Yes/Genesis. I despise three-note, repetitive songs without orginality, like most of new music seems to be today. Can someone steer me in the right direction?

PS - By old-timer i mean like 30 🙂 Figured that would be old on this forum...

Give A Perfect Circle a shot. It is pretty progressive IMHO. If you like APC, try Tool. The lead singer sings for both bands. I would try APC first though... Anyway, they are both pretty heavy, so be warned.

IQ
Jadis
King Crimson and all derivatives
Adrian Belew
Solaris
After Crying
Mastermind
Transatlantic <--ESPECIALLY if you like Spock's Beard and DT since Neal Morse and Mike Portnoy are both in it.
Liquid Tension Experiment
DFA
Balleto Di Bronzo
Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso
Torre d'Alchemista
Devil Doll
Ayreon

that should be enough to get you started for a little while 🙂

If you haven't listened to any Tool in the past, I highly recommend there early EP called Opiate. It's phenomenal!

I still can't believe that Neal Morse went fund-a-mental Christian and quit the band before the Snow tour. Something else I love f**ked up by religion.

If you like Phish you should check out some other jam bands like Widespread Panic and String Cheese Incident
For some good prog rock there is always Queens of the Stoneage, but if you haven't heard much Tool definetly check them out

Wow.. progressive rock. Haven't heard much of that in a while..

One old school band I remember being pretty good was Marillion.

Oh yah, I listened to some marillion...didn't like it all that much. I think they were trying too hard to be progressive and it showed. I am definitely not afraid of the hard stuff...Tool is on my list. Just saw the APC video for Judith. Sounded good but definitely not progressive...maybe a little too pop for my tastes. I prefer to stay way off the mainstream...that usually connotes good music in my opinion.

I have one transatlantic CD. I'll give it another try. Please recommend a LTE cd for me to get.

Oh, and Jzero, recommend a King Crimson CD...i have been meaning to try them out for years.

That's a great CD too. I can't wait to hear their new one when it comes out after hearing some of the live stuff, it's a little bit darker.

Also, I will give the obligitory nomination for Modest Mouse, the greatest band in my sig and on Earth. 🙂

You might like Mad at Gravity, The Juliana Theory, or Guster. I didn't know about any of these bands until recently (Guster only last week, actually), but now they're three of my favorites.

Edit: You might also like Depswa, although they might be a little too "mainstream-sounding" for you. I love them, though.

ooh, yes, i didn't even think about that one, but it's an exellent album with indie, emo, and post-hardcore influences.

a great post-hardcore band is the blood brothers. i've been pushing them on people lately. 🙂

lastly, cursive is a great band that can do no wrong.

wait, one last plug 😉: sigur ros sound a lot different than the above bands but are probably the best of the bunch.

Nightwish - out of Finland. Not sure if it's really prog metal, or goth metal, or whatever (although they are playing the ProgPower IV Festival in Atlanta in September). This will be only their second time in North America, and it's only two shows (I am driving over 400 miles to see the Montreal Show). Their singer, Tarja Turunen, is classically trained and has an incredible voice, she sings in an operatic style that is just something to hear. I am trying to raise awareness of them over here so they will play the States more often. 🙂

Another good call. Also, Staind is a good suggestions, though less prog than maybe what you are looking for.

I'm sure these others are good suggestions, too. I went with Tool and APC as they are mainstream. I know they are excellent, and I'm more than confident that you will enjoy them.

Well, I'm a new-timer (16), but also enjoy prog rock / metal. Unfortunately, I don't get "out" much (that's what sucks about home schooling), so this thread is useful to me because it has provided a plentiful source of possibilities for me to "try out." 😉
