It's not quite prog-metal, but Chris Cornell's Euphoria Morning is a good blend of soulful melody with near-metal intensity. More like "Closer to the Heart" or "Hold On" than "Roundabout" or "Tom Sawyer." Soundgarden's Superunknown is also worth a listen.

For old-school prog, Wishbone Ash is good, especially their all-instrumental Noveau Calls disc.

Like BatmanNate said, both Mogwai and Modest Mouse are excellent bands. Also Hum, Trail of the Dead, Death Cab for Cutie, Sunny Day Real Estate, Decemberist, and especially Godspeed You Black Emperor are in the right direction imo. 😛

But to be honest you probably already have a better taste in music than most young people. Stick with what you like, that's the best advice I can give.

I'm also giving a recommendation to Tool and A Perfect Circle. Fantastic music that my 29 year old brother likes as well.

In terms of which albums to get ... honestly, all of them rule. Each one has its own music style and personality ... get to know each of them and you'll discover some wonderful things.

If you like the harder stuff, Symphony X, Mastermind and APC are great.
For Liquid Tension Experiment, their albums are "Liquid Tension Experiment" and "Two." I have heard/seen Two. It's very good. Hard rocking.

I still can't believe that Neal Morse went fund-a-mental Christian and quit the band before the Snow tour. Something else I love f**ked up by religion.
LOL
Even as a Christian, I have trouble buying into the "Jesus told me to quit the band" story....

go to www.mikeportnoy.com (he's the drummer from Dream Theater in case you were unaware) and ask around. The people there have great taste in music.

Also, if you like heavier stuff, check out Opeth. They're nearly death metal, but they're so diverse and complex... its beautiful.

blood brothers are sweet.

Just curious, but what Mogwai CD did you order? Bah, you're guaranteed to love it anyways. 😛 If you like them I recomend Godspeed You Black Emperor, Sigur Ros, and The For Carnation. They are all similar.

And rocadelpunk, you got some good stuff in that list.

***Snip immense list of bands***

Even by the most liberal definitions of what Progressive Rock might be, none of these bands really fit the bill. Most of them aren't even close!

Prog Rock! Correct genre, please 🙂

Dang! you beat me to it! I love those guys... I got 5 of their albums.

Another vote for Marillion as well.

I don't think Fates Warning has been mentioned yet.

Just for the record, for anyone out there who has not listened to them Spock's Beard. Their newest albumn Snow has been in my car cd player/mp3 player/home stereo for the past 6 months. IMHO one of the greatest prog concept double-albumns ever - and I have been listening to prog for a long time. I just can't seem to get tired of it.

Prior to that Dream Theater - Scenes From a Memory was it for close to a year.

If you haven't listened to any Beard, get that one...NOW!~

Yup Snow is pretty darn good. I actually really like all Dream Theater albums (I have em all 🙂)

My Music List

Ooh... I totally forgot about Gentle Giant!!! By the sounds of things, you would love these guys... probably one
of the most intricate musicians ever.

Would meshuggah be classified as prog metal?
LOL, no, BBWF, I don't think Meshuggah counts as prog metal. I could be wrong, though. 🙂

Mucman: you get bonus points for having almost every DT album, plus tons (all?) of Rush albums. The only thing I can claim is that I have more Pink Floyd albums than you do, but that's beside the point of this thread. 😉

Oh yah, I have several Gentle Giant albums. Never really got into them hardcore but listened to a lot of their stuff.

BTW, Muckman, have you ever heard DT's first album - When Dream and Day Unite? Most DT fans don't even know about it. I think it's their best album (circa 1986) prior to them getting that horrendous screacher-of-a-lead-singer...whatever his name is...(the Voivod guy right?) I can't stand their other albums prior to Scenes because of him...but his vocals definitely got better (read - toned down) for Scenes.

I consider myself a DT fan, and do know about that album, but haven't... um... "got" it yet. I'll have to "check" it out. 😉

I'm not exactly clear on the order in which the albums were released...

<-- goes off to dreamtheater.net to find out...

Hmm, according to this page, "When Dream And Day Unite" was released in 1989. I am not familiar with the timeline of who was in the band when, and don't really have the time to check it out tonight, as I have to get to sleep early (that will be a project for tomorrow after my SAT), but he must have not joined until after "Images and Words" (1992) because IMHO the singing on that is pretty good. 🙂

One of the albums you might be referring to with the more "screeching" singing could be "Awake." I like some of the songs from that one; personally, the singing doesn't really annoy me, but everyone does have different tastes.

wow, you ask people for prog-rock recommendation and they give you lists--including one of 5000--of their favorite, totally unrelated artists

Nightwish - out of Finland. Not sure if it's really prog metal, or goth metal, or whatever (although they are playing the ProgPower IV Festival in Atlanta in September). This will be only their second time in North America, and it's only two shows (I am driving over 400 miles to see the Montreal Show). Their singer, Tarja Turunen, is classically trained and has an incredible voice, she sings in an operatic style that is just something to hear. I am trying to raise awareness of them over here so they will play the States more often. 🙂

They're comming to Canada??!! Sh!t, I gotta go see them....I LOVE Nightwish, can't get enough of their stuff. Damn, thanks for telling me.

Anyway, as for the original thread topic, I am more into prog-metal and neo-classical metal, so here are a few suggestions.

Apocalyptica - Death Metal, with chellos. Yes, chellos, you'd be surprised how good it can be. Check out their "Cult" album (songs to sample: Path, Struggle, Hall of the Mountain King)

Dark Tranquility - death metal/prog death metal. If you like death metal, check out their Gallery album (songs: Punish My Heaven, Lethe, Gallery, Edenspring). if you like Prog death metal, check out "Haven" (sample songs: Wonders at your Feet, Not Build to Last).

Nighwish - as sixpack said, great neo-classical metal. Opera-like vocals, lots of classical background music, but still metal. Very nice. Check out "Oceanborn" (sample songs: Stargazers, Moondance)

Rammstein - these guys are german and quite hard, but extremely good. They're kinda popular even here in NA, so you've probably heard of them. Check out their Mutter album, sample songs: Mein Herz Brennt, Feurer Frei, Mutter. I tell ya German sounds like it was made for hard metal/rock.

Rhapsody - these guys are neo-symphonic metal. Their albums are usually a retelling of some fantasy story. These guys are masters at the guitar and they usually have lots of great vocals. Check out "Power Of The Dragonflame" album, more specifically "Knighrider of Doom". Also check out thier "Emerald Sword" single.

Threatre of Tragedy - very...gothy...They have a girl vocalist with a sweet angelic voice and at the same time a guy with a death-metal type voice. Very weird, but very good mix. Their later stuff sucks, but checkout "Velvet Darkness they Fear", samples: "and when he falleth", "Der Tanz, Der Schatten"

Therion - these guys are good. Very good. Like nightwish, they are neo-classical metal, but they mix it up nicely. Some fo the stuff is hard ("The Wild Hunt"), while other stuff is not so much ("Siren of the Woods"). Definately check out their "Secrets of the Runes" Album, samples: Midgard, Asgard, Schwarzalbenheim.

Well, that's it for now. I really suggest you try some of these out. Tool (very good prog rock as others have said) used to be my favs until Therion and Nightwish came around.

If you didn't order Lateralus, I suggest you try to change your order and try to get that instead.

Its their best (and most prog) in my not-so-humble opinion.
