Thoughts on the Sony CLIE NX60/NX70v as an Xmas gift for GF?

OK, I'm looking for a PDA to give my GF for Xmas. This Sony impresses me because they have a keypad built in.

I'll admit I'm completely clueless about PDAs. Would this be a good choice? What are the top rated PDAs today?

Mods, please don't move this to GH. I'll get much more traffic here.

Thanks :)

Sony's PDAs are nice however overpriced and underpowered for what you get when Pocket PC is quickly gaining market share over the Palm.

For the best bang for your buck and latest and greatest (these are BRAND NEW models) I would check out the new Dell or ViewSonic Pocket PC PDA's, ask NFS4 he's the expert/guru.

Well, I need something I can buy in the next few weeks. If I don't have my xmas shopping done by the end of Nov, I feel rushed and it kind of ruins December for me.

Also, I think a built in key pad is a big plus. What would you suggest that has this?

Is she actually going to use the built in keyboard?

If you are absolutely 100% without a doubt certain that she is then buy the Sony.

Well, she will use it primarily to keep her contacts and dates organized. That requires data entry all the time. Doesn't a keypad make that a hell of a lot easier?

Yeah, I saw the NX70V. But it seemed like overkill with the built in digital camera. Although it was only $90 more. You think it's worth it?

Is the 60 the same as the 70, just without the camera?

In concept yes it does but the keyboard appears to be very very tiny and it would probably be a painstackingly slow and tedious process entering in all of her contact info.

An easier/faster solution to enter all your initial contact info is to do it on the PC/Mac then when you HotSync it, everything is transferred to the PDA. Some PDA PIM software will interface with MS Outlook (if she already has her contacts there) and it's all a matter of clicks and it's done. If she has to enter a few contacts a day then maybe this gimmicky keyboard is worth it but I still think that the Pocket PC is where it's happenin'.

If you do decide to buy the Sony, make sure to get the best price. Dell Home Software and Peripherals is probably your best bet, they usually have 20% off coupons, plus 2% back from eBates.com and usually toss in free shipping with no tax in most states.

Thanks, Ross. Actually, Techonweb.com has it for $50 cheaper, shipped, than Dell has it. I guess I should wait for a Dell sale on PDAs?

BTW, my Email is in my profile if you have something to send me.

DITTO WHAT ROSSMAN SAID!!

You can pick up the Viewsonic V35 for $299 from Amazon. The Dell PDA's run $199 and $299. The Sony is pushing $500-600. It's one thing to get your GF an expensive gift, yet it's a complete different thing if she's not gonna use it fully. In that case, I'd rather it be $200 - $300 down the drain instead of $500 - $600

BINGO!

The Dell/ViewSonic Pocket PC PDA offers so much more bang for your buck it ain't funny. Although they don't come with gimmicky built in keyboards or digicams they do have very portable keyboards available which attach to the Pocket PC PDA.

Like I said before all your initial entry of contacts can be done on the PC (using a regular keyboard and monitor) then transferred to your PDA after you HotSync. Unless she's going to be entering in 5+ new contacts every day the keyboard is really pointless. If you want a keyboard, get a laptop or sublaptop.

When I bought my Sony PDA I entered in all my initial PDA contact info on my PC and transferred it to my PDA when it HotSync'd. Took a whopping 10 minutes for about 50 contacts.

OK, I understand that Pocket PC, in your opinion, is going to be dominant. However, would it behoove me to get her a Palm OS based PDA if her boss, and most of her co-workers have Palms? Or would that not matter? (I told you I'm clueless about PDAs, I just use my lappy for all that)

Ah good point. If she's going to be interacting with other Palm OS users you should definitely buy her a Palm/Sony/Handspring PDA and avoid Pocket PC PDA's.

(puts away his Pocket PC pom poms)

Hrm...I'm keeping my pompoms out...

You can get a program (Peacemaker) that allows PocketPCs to receive data and beam data to PalmOS devices. When I had my EM500, it worked great whenever I had to transfer data with Palm users. Other than that, the only thing I can think of is if her company uses a standardized email/PIM/etc system such as Groupwise. I don't know how PocketPCs sync with Groupwise. Maybe someone with a bit more Novell experience could comment.

werk - You could always borrow my pom pom's :D

I don't think using a program like (Peacemaker) would be as seamless and easy for his g/f to communicate with other Palm users. I would just stick with a native Palm OS solution from Palm/Sony/Handspring.

Those are pretty sweet, although if you're gonna spend that much, might as well spring a little more and get the one with the camera. Its pretty cool.

I kinda regret spending $550 on my girlfriend for her birthday...but at the time I figured we be together without problems now.

You'd be surprised how seamless it is. All you have to do is install it, and it's integrated into the Contacts app. You're set to send and receive to just about any IR device. You do have to run an app to send notes or files, but it's incredibly simple. :)
