Vsync: Some love some hate. Tearing Vs Input Lag etc etc.

I have always been one who would NOT use vsync because I would notice horrible input lag when using it. I don't like tearing, but I would always and still would choose tearing over dealing with input lag (especially since I mostly play FPS)

Picked up Diablo 3 recently and was playing around with the settings and turned on adaptive vsync in the driver and did not experience any input lag.

i realize that adaptive actually turns vsync off when dropping below 60 FPS but the game was easily pegged at 60 FPS the whole time on my setup. My first thought was, ok its an action rpg so maybe I'm just not noticing it.

So i turned it on for BF3 and Crysis 2 as well and low and behold no input lag on those either even when stuck on 60 FPS (IE vsync on)

Is there something special about adaptive sync that mitigates input lag? With no input lag, i see no reason not to use this on all my games at this point. Its best of both worlds - no tearing and no input lag.

Curious if anyone else has a similar experience or can shed some light on the situation.
 
There is still tearing as below 60fps it turns vsync off and it turns vsync on at 60fps+.

IMO leaving vsync on is best unless you're a competitive gamer.
 
i realize it turns vsync off below 60fps, but for me (and i thought everyone?) tearing only occurs when you have more frames than your monitors refresh rate.

IE - below 60fps = no tearing.

I will NEVER understand why some people say this. how can you play games and not notice the tearing below 60 fps just like above it? there is nothing magical that happens below 60 fp as frames can and will still be out of sync. it takes nothing more than reasonable eye site to see tearing occurs at ANT framerate. in fact the games I notice the most tearing in are the ones with the lowest framerate.

its silly that I should have to even post a video of what you people should already be seeing for yourself but here goes. this is Metro 2033 at 25-30 fps and tearing like crazy with 2 or 3 tears at a time even. at around 16 and 44 seconds or so its pretty clear to see the multiple tears. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RkO8U8r2Tf8

same here ... i got tearing even when i have below 60 fps on adaptive v sync .... so it makes no sense to turn it on or off ;/ it works like v sync off .... does not fix tearing when fps is below 60 ...

adaptive vsync is good for those games where the framerate fluctuates like crazy or has random demanding areas. you get some tearing in those spots but its usually better than the annoying stutter that happens when dropping well below 60 fps with vsync on.
 
My experiece is that in some games, like the Witcher and the witcher 2 (Vsync Off), my tearing is almost not visible when I have very high FPS, like 80FPS +. However, when dropping below 70FPS I begin to notice tearing. This is rather strange, since I use a 60Hz monitor.

With Vsync On, I get no tearing as long as I stay at around 60FPS, but as toyota says, you get tearing when you fall much below 60FPS. And it's almost worse than tearing at 60 +. Below 60fps gives lag and tearing. Terrible.

I've tried Adaptive Vsync a couple of times, did nothing for me. The lag and tearing where still there, when falling much below 60FPS.

Anyway... There was a reason I got 2x GTX 670 SLI for gaming at 1920x1200 or 1920x1080 😀 I can play The Witcher 2 with no Vsync and get those 80 - 100FPS without noticing the tearing (Strangely enough, since the picture should be out of sync). No input lag and very, very fluid.

I also use Vsync in many games, where my FPS will never drop below 60FPS due to the graphics power, this is very fluid. A good example is Skyrim. This game is made to use Vsync. However, if you drop much below 60FPS in this game, it lags like crazy. It's so much better at 60FPS.

I think in all honesty its time for all games to support triple buffering. Its the only realistic proposition to getting rid of the tears without the horrid impact of reduction in FPS. Along with it however we need to remove some of the latency inherent throughout the rest of the pipeline. One place where its routinely added unnecessarily is the monitor where models range from around 16ms all the way up to 60ms or even more.

My ideal combination I think is a 120Hz IPS or similar high colour quality monitor technology which achieves almost no ghosting. Combine that with triple buffering and I would be happy.

I agree though that IQ would be fantastic. It would be bloody expensive though.

Well i do have 20 20 vision no contacts or glasses and i dont see it below 60 fps so get off your high horse. The thread was more about the lack of input lag anyway
 
Adaptive Vsync still has input lag though. I can tell. Generally I use vsync if I can also use triple buffering via D3D Overrider. sometimes the game crashes with that in use (SKyrim with ENB mods for example). So for those situations I turn vsync off to avoid two things. the 30fps drops, and the input lag. I could take some input lag on a game like Skyrim, but with 30fps drops I cannot handle vsync on and adaptive vsync still introduces some screen tearing so to me it's not worth using.

I see tearing pretty much at any FPS number when vsync is off too, but sometimes the input lag is so bad due to not having triple buffering available that I just turn vsync off. Adaptive vsync is good in theory but if you're still gonna get screen tearing, just turn vsync off all the way.

Adaptive vsync is busted it only work half the time or less LOL nice try nvidia but you failed with Adaptive vsync but I somehow think this was more meant to be a bate and hook to grab more noobs into a sale. The most powerful thing about nvidia is there marketing. So in short Adaptive vsync still tears so in my eyes that a FAIL.

Still tears,LOL,do you know how adaptive Vsync works?
 
It is supposed to fix screen tearing. The orginal plain old vsync WORKS at inhibiting screen tearing and this new version doesn't so it is busted to my eyes and what they see.
Erm,no its not.anyways im using it and i drop below 60 fps and i tear,a good thing imo.as the tear is rare.
