Thoughts on Cel Shading in video games?

I think it depends entirely upon the game.

On DC, stuff like JGR and toon based games like Wacky Races and Looney Tunes Space Race worked well being cel-shaded.

IMHO, JSRF needs cel-shading to BE JSRF
Robotech's cel shading works well for that title.
A cel-shaded Cowboy Bebop game would be cool.

Like you, tho, I am skeptical of a cel-shaded FPS like XIII.

Poor Zelda. :(

It's going to bomb horribly. After seeing the success of Metroid Prime in realistic modern awesome graphics, they should just can Zelda and redo it.

It only works for games based on cartoons .. (real cartoons like Robotech)

If I wanted all my games to look like Flash, I'd just hang out at shockwave.com

It does work well for some games, especially those with the cartoon like feel. Otherwise its a fad and a lot of the games are going to be ugly flops

I agree... cel shading is totally a fad these days, because our tech is finally letting us do it easily.
Some games it is good on, some games it is used to hide a lack of attention to detail on the developer's side, and on some games, it sucks...

BTW, my roomate just rented metroid prime today, and although I thought the ads looked good, it really isn't that detailed of a game... games like ut2003 (PC) put it to shame in that respect. I played it for a few, and all I could keep thinking was... turok on n64, all over again! It might be a cool game to get into, but lets face it, the graphics are not anywhere near today's PC FPS games.

Cel-shading worked excellently in JGR and Looney Tunes.

That's it. Fad should have ended there. JSRF is acceptable under the sequel rules - but "Celda" and a cel-FPS? And I'm sorry, but Auto Molestta had better have zero pixelation / artifacts etc if they're going to try to pull the "Look! We're 1337! We cel-shade!" approach. I don't know ... something about the goofy cartoon colours just doesn't go well with cars. Makes em look extra-ricey.

I swear I'm the only person who thinks that the new Zelda looks great; it's like a free-roaming Dragon's Lair (on a related note, is Dragon's Lair 3D free-roaming, or does it follow the classic "move in the right direction at the right time" mechanics?). Then again, I've always been a fan of Saturday morning cartoons, so maybe I'm just predisposed to the look in the first place.

For cartoony games like JSR, it's cool - but that FPS looks...odd

like a step in the wrong direction

Anyways, I think it's pretty cool, as long as it's applied right

The point is in your answer....Zelda isn't Dragon's Lair. Its Zelda the game, not no #@* cartoon.

That's exactly the criticism levied against Zelda 64 when it first came out; people didn't like the 3D mechanics as opposed to the game's classic look. And now Zelda 64 is one of the flagship titles for that platform (people seemed to have similar worries about Metroid Prime and GameCube).

Even if I wasn't a fan of the look, if the gameplay at all mirrors Ocarina of Time or Majora's Mask, the game is a slam dunk.

I think this cel shading look is just incredibly cool.... I for one think Zelda will rock. That racing game looks pretty sweet as well...

I like the cell shaded Zelda. Of course I'm not a Zelda nut so what do I know...

Why not debate whether or not we need cartoons and animated movies? It's just about the same argument. If a game uses cell-shading, then good for that game. It's not going to change my mind all that much if the gameplay and depth that I want is there. Same for disney movies...they don't look real and aren't to be taken as something real. Videogames are just videogames. The new Zelda is most likely going to be great with or without cellshading. That's like saying a movie like Toy Story sucked because it was a computer animated movie. But, I guess there are folks out there that do feel that way.

On another note, I have the import of Auto Modellista and it put me to sleep pretty quick. When racing, I just didn't get a sense of speed at all. The handling on the first car I choose was terrible as well. The graphics looked pretty cool if you like cellshading, but I seriously thought the gameplay was lacking. I just didn't think I was going very fast at all, more like playing those old car games where you just dodge things as they come down the screen. Maybe the American version that I can actually read will be better. Maybe they are working on the handling to make it a bit tighter as well. However, I'd much rather put in NFS:HP2 or Gran Turismo right now.

I could build a decent computer for under $1000, and then i'd be able to do all kinds of things, not to mention download as many games as I can find for free... And for a little over $200, you'd be stuck with one crappy game and no tv while you play. That sucks!
