Those Windows patches can really mess up your rig

I have a one week old hd running an (obviously) fresh install of WinXP. I got SP1 and everything was fine.

Yesterday I see the patch for a new threat and get that too. Today, I boot up and it takes seriosuly 3+ minutes to boot up (it stayed in the Win XP boot screen for so long I had to push restart). Before the boot screen came up, the white loading bar from 2k shows up. That's something you never see because it goes by so fast normally. I tried twice before going in to safe mode and uninstalled the patch with "SP2" in it.

I thought it was the newest one but apparently it didn't fix things. I still have horrible boot times and now I have to go through and start uninstalling each one.

This is what I get for actually updating my rig. I never once had OS issues on my old rig and I never once downloaded any patch.

Are there any known "fixes" that really f'ed the boot time? I seem to remember a few being named off but I can't remember off the top of my head.

Damn you microsoft! You make a product in which I'm almost forced to use!

I had the same issues with Video Drivers... I installed their suggested Video Drivers and it TOTALLY F*CKED UP MY MACHINE! I WAS PISSED.. until I rolled back the drivers... now its still semi-stable.. but once in a while it will F*CK UP. (Excuse my EXPLICT LYRICS but I felt the need to convey my EXTREME anger towards drivers that F*CK up your rig).

I never install their "recommended" drivers. Just get those straight from the manufacturer.

Thats why after my initial install, I created a ghost image..... that way when windows gets bloated or something gets really screwed, I just blow the old image back on...

Well fortunately I have a backup drive so I can just reload windows again. It's just so annoying.

bleeb, which recommended drivers are you talking about exactly?

Yeah, I don't know WTF it fixes, but after every damn time there's a fix (or update), my fcuking comp runs slower, and also my bandwidth gets just a tad smaller.

Why not SP1a? It's the latest.

Oh, uhh..I dunno what I got exactly. It just said I needed 30 or so updates and I got 'em all. It was all the recent ones.

I think I'm going to uninstall them all and enjoy a fast running computer. I *never* had any problems before. No viruses, attacks, nothing.

Ahh the joys of not being locked into any products. :D

Which OS are you promoting? :)

I wasn't. Promoting just one might cause someone to get locked into that one.

Oh, bummer. I was hoping to hear "BSD rocks!" Or "Linux is sooo cool! Maybe even a "Apple is the best".

I've tried Linux, all of apples OS's and Windows. Windows is just the best option for me.

A fast computer? You should try Win 2K Pro SP4. It's pretty much like XP, but faster, more efficient... it just doesn't have visual styles/native ZIP support/cleartype text smoothing.

Yeah, Barton 2500+

I've had nothing but bad luck with Win2k. It seems much slower than any OS I've used before (besides a Mac version). Does SP4 speed things up?

Oh, bummer. I was hoping to hear "BSD rocks!" Or "Linux is sooo cool! Maybe even a "Apple is the best".

Ok then, I have:
Ultra sparc 10/440: OpenBSD 3.4-current
AthlonXP 1800+: OpenBSD 3.4-current
p3 600 (Inspiron 3600 or something laptop): OpenBSD 3.4-stable
p1 133: OpenBSD 3.4-stable
iBook 500: Mac OS X 10.1.5
Dual p3 866: Debian GNU/Linux testing

I also have a sparcstation 10 that isn't running anything currently, but may be running OpenBSD or NetBSD in the near future.

I want atleast one more Linux machine, a Windows machine, another Mac, a couple of VIA C3 Nehemiah machines (one to replacec my p133 and maybe another for testing), an AMD-64 OpenBSD machine, maybe a Plan 9 box, and maybe an UltraSPARC based machine for Solaris. Like I said, I don't want to be locked into anything, although I think my personal preference shows. ;)

I'm just an OS geek, I guess.

I've tried Linux, all of apples OS's and Windows. Windows is just the best option for me.

I can diggit. Variety is the spice of life though ;)

How good is a firewall if the code it is built on is broken? ;)

I installed the Critical Update that fixes the recent "phishing" problem and now after I log in, I have to sit looking at a blank screen with only the mouse for ~50 seconds before WinXP actually loads to the desktop. (I installed all Critical Updates, no Recommended, no Drivers)
