Anyone think of using system restore to take it back to a point before the updates?

That's pretty much pointless. I know exactly what's causing it, the stupid "fixes". I can just uninstall them myself without losing any other programs.

I turned off system restore, never found a use for it.

AthlonXP 1800+: OpenBSD 3.4-current

p1 133: OpenBSD 3.4-stable
iBook 500: Mac OS X 10.1.5
Dual p3 866: Debian GNU/Linux testing

I also have a sparcstation 10 that isn't running anything currently, but may be running OpenBSD or NetBSD in the near future.

I want atleast one more Linux machine, a Windows machine, another Mac, a couple of VIA C3 Nehemiah machines (one to replacec my p133 and maybe another for testing), an AMD-64 OpenBSD machine, maybe a Plan 9 box, and maybe an UltraSPARC based machine for Solaris. Like I said, I don't want to be locked into anything, although I think my personal preference shows. ;)

I'm just an OS geek, I guess.

I've tried Linux, all of apples OS's and Windows. Windows is just the best option for me.

I can diggit. Variety is the spice of life though ;)

Holy crisap. You have too many comps. Why would you need that many? Maybe to verify code on multiple platforms...? Otherwise that's insane. It's great you have multiple perspectives though.

My question to you then: what does linux and or BSD provide that Windows does not. I am NOT in any way trying to start anything at all, in fact it's quite the opposite. I'd like to know the pros and cons of each OS so I can pick one that's best.

If you want to PM me about it, that'd be awesome too.

Edumacation. I learn a lot playing around with these. The iBook is my general "workstation" at home, and the Inspiron is my writing machine away from home. Everything else is there for my convenience.

The reason I use it is about all I can offer you: Despite having grown up on Microsoft products, these other systems make more sense to me. I can install OpenBSD in under half about half an hour on a network install, and feel confident in my ability to use it, and withstand pretty much all attacks out there. It's comfortable. :)

With regards to the firewall (p133), again it's comfortable. OpenBSD also makes an excellent firewall machine. Between it's security features, code auditting, and top of the line firewalling software, OpenBSD is quickly becoming almost enterprise worthy. Find another system that has a great firewall, High Availability failover capabilities, cryptography where it can, and a dozen security features that users will never need to even know about for under the price of half an hour of your time. ;) I am sure Linux, NetBSD, and FreeBSD have some nice capabilities in these regards, but I don't have working knowledge in that area for them.

You just found one reason. You create a restore point just before you download/install the update. If it screws your computer up, you restore back to that point and DON'T LOSE ANY PROGRAMS. Your computer is JUST AS IT WAS BEFORE THE INSTALL.

Yeah, I know but it's just as easy to click "uninstal". I've heard people having problems with System Restore so just unisntalling them might be the only sure fire way. I'm sure they both work pretty well though

Just do the critical OS updates. Don't do the driver updates. As far as drivers go, stick with what works and read the forums if you're having problems, generally no reason to update unless you're a benchmark junkie.

The only Windows update that screwed me over was some IE security one that was crashing out Java. Update uninstall/reinstall fixed it.
