Sorry that i ever tried to argue with the gods of Distributed Computing.

I totally agree with you. It annoys me when my friends leave their PCs on for SETI and AIM. Useless things wasting precious energy.

You may however be treating yourself to the delusions that you're really saving anything.

Consider that once up and running, the machine uses less electricity than a light bulb.
Consider that the wear-and-tear on your machine comes during boot-up,
and consider that the extra power doing so, likely erases any percieved savings in electricity and you
may find that leaving them on makes perfect sense.

Of course, it doesn't cost anything to allow the processor to crunch distributed projects since it's on anyway
and viola' ! you have all the reason in the world to leave 'em on. :)
/ my 2cents.

Unless you are doing something critical that NEEDS your computer to be on, please turn it off.
You are just wasting electricity.

Some reasons for which people leave the comp on which I think are really dumb(and i have seen all these reasons):
-Running SETI - stupid - believe me you are not going to find anything
-Running RC5 - stupid - who cares about that key
-Achieving greatest uptime - its a damn PC for gods sake - personal computer - not a freaking server.
-Being online on AIM for the longest time - this is THE dumbest reason for leaving computer on - I mean there must be something seriously wrong with you if this is what gives your ego a boost.
-I dont pay for electricity, so who cares - this is pretty dumb too

I know I will get flamed for RC5/SETI but do you seriously think they are doing anything???
I bet 75% of the people running SETI dont even know what the heck it does. Dont just tell me it does fourier analysis. :p

Anyway, flame on if you want to...
well its actually a fast fourier transform...

then theres some other things it does. don't quite remember what...

and he with the most uptime wins.

seti and rc5 i agree are stupid. the only reason i leave my computer on is i'm downloading crap from kazaa. back when i was in the dorms, though i left it on all the time. my roomate felt that leaving the air conditioning on all year was good too, he figured we were getting more for our money.

you could of course have your computer configured properly to idle everything and go into sleep mode . thats pretty power saving.

nice sig btw johnjbruin. i swear you l337ified mine.

Bah, bull. Modern computers in sleep mode draw 6 watts. Just leaving it plugged into the wall will draw 3. Considering that its much better for your components to be left running 24/7 than constantly being subjected to hot and cold temperatures when you restart everyday, I'll leave my five computers on 24.7, thank you.

And yes, I do run a DC program. SETI on some (not stupid) and folding@home on other (certainly not stupid).

edit: and I dont live in california. :)

Not saying to turn it off when you know you will use it in like half an hour.
But more for situations like you go to work for school/work for like 6 hrs..., the times you sleep for more that 5-6 hrs...etc

i live in california, but i still leave both my PCs on 24-7. i do it cuz i dont want to wait for it to boot up, and i just leave my server and AIM running on it, even though there isnt much reason to. its a habit. and as for power, it doesnt really matter, the power bill isnt that high, even though its a lot higher then before. and leaving my computer on doesnt take as much power as watching my TV etc.

I never sleep, so turning my computer off is pretty much useless.

I have a movie ticket from the other day. It's the only proof I have that I've left the house in weeks...

Yes. It's worth my PC's time and electricity I pay for. SETI may never find the little green men, but it's worth trying, at the price I pay to keep my machines running. If I listen to you and do nothing, what do my machines accomplish? Nothing. Sounds great, eh? Turn off your machine and go to bed.

I dont leave my PC on because of its loud fan. But if I had a quiter fan, I would leave it on all the time. Why? It doesnt make a significant change in my elecrticity bill, I can crunch for SETI (Which is fun for me), leave on AIM+ (Boosts my ego;)), and maybe run a FTP server if it was up 24/7. Its my money, so I can decide how much money I want to spend on my electricity:)

Why subject my components to the harsher conditions of shutting it off/turning it back on? Like I said, in sleep mode a computers draws only slightly more power than it would be turned off.

You for sure are confused with the facts-
-a computer does use more energy that a 60watt light bulb(unless you have a special circumstance)
-wear and tear...i dunno...
-you mean to say booting up your com takes up enough energy as it would to run it for 6 hrs :Q
-processor idle or full power itself makes difference in power consumption, specially AMD chips (not an AMD hater, just they do, have an XP myself)

Hello, if you're computer isnt being used for an extended period of time all energystar compliant monitors and most computers will go into a sleep mode.
