Unless you are doing something critical that NEEDS your computer to be on, please turn it off.
You are just wasting electricity.
Some reasons for which people leave the comp on which I think are really dumb(and i have seen all these reasons):
-Running SETI - stupid - believe me you are not going to find anything
-Running RC5 - stupid - who cares about that key
-Achieving greatest uptime - its a damn PC for gods sake - personal computer - not a freaking server.
-Being online on AIM for the longest time - this is THE dumbest reason for leaving computer on - I mean there must be something seriously wrong with you if this is what gives your ego a boost.
-I dont pay for electricity, so who cares - this is pretty dumb too
I know I will get flamed for RC5/SETI but do you seriously think they are doing anything???
I bet 75% of the people running SETI dont even know what the heck it does. Dont just tell me it does fourier analysis.
Anyway, flame on if you want to...

Yes. It's worth my PC's time and electricity I pay for. SETI may never find the little green men, but it's worth trying, at the price I pay to keep my machines running. If I listen to you and do nothing, what do my machines accomplish? Nothing. Sounds great, eh? Turn off your machine and go to bed.I know I will get flamed for RC5/SETI but do you seriously think they are doing anything???

Not saying to turn it off when you know you will use it in like half an hour.
But more for situations like you go to work for school/work for like 6 hrs..., the times you sleep for more that 5-6 hrs...etc

You may however be treating yourself to the delusions that you're really saving anything.
Consider that once up and running, the machine uses less electricity than a light bulb.
Consider that the wear-and-tear on your machine comes during boot-up,
and consider that the extra power doing so, likely erases any percieved savings in electricity and you
may find that leaving them on makes perfect sense.
Of course, it doesn't cost anything to allow the processor to crunch distributed projects since it's on anyway
and viola' ! you have all the reason in the world to leave 'em on.
/ my 2cents.

Why subject my components to the harsher conditions of shutting it off/turning it back on? Like I said, in sleep mode a computers draws only slightly more power than it would be turned off.
sleep mode was not part of the conversation. argument was b/w on and off
