Science has unequivocally proven that individuals still retaining the lizard part of the brain responsible for cilantro tasing like anything other than soap to be primitive and unevolved.

Ordered lunch and stated I did not want cilantro. Food was served covered with the vile weed. Meal ruined.

Where did you go to school that taught homo sapiens came from lizards?
A near impossible, yet successful, sexual encounter nearly a million years ago brought upon this lesser evolved species of human. It's not talk about much in research and science journals given the sensitivativy around it. Those that taste cilantro as soap are not descended from this line.

So...AdamK47 has admitted that he's a member of a genetically inferior group...
(I don't really care for cilantro (or coriander) much, but don't get the soapy taste...and my wife is mildly allergic to cilantro, so we don't usually eat it unless we go out for a meal.

OR some folks never advanced much beyond the palate of an 8 year old child. ;)

Perhaps bologna & cheese on wonder bread with copious generic mayo is more your speed? (shall I remove the crust?)

There are actual people that tastes cilantro like soap. Op is one such inferior individual. I call them potty mouth.
Maybe you're the potty mouth, it's just your mouth is so dirty the soapy taste doesn't penetrate.

I don't really eat enough cilantro to be sure which camp I'm in, I think the salsa I ate at a Mexican place a few weeks back may have had a soapy undercurrent?

It's about 10% of the population. I learned this when I had a food business, we had cilantro in one of our sauces. A customer asked to try it separately first to see how it tasted to him. And when he told us why, we were enlightened.

At this point I'm not sure if I like it or not. In the past it's tasted like soap to me. I bought a case of soup and didn't realize it had cilantro until I tasted the first bite. I knew immediately that it contained cilantro and confirmed by looking at the ingredients. I forced myself to finish the bowl and I must say I really like the soup and ate the entire case. It's a shame it now costs $40 for 12 cans.

Nah, OP is from the Unbelievably fucKed up teeth land, so he's probably more into jamming spotted dick in his mouth.

Well...

Damnit, Mulder was right! They've been making alien human hybrids this whole time! They just started earlier. Its like bizarro Jurassic Park!

I don't know why but this made me laugh. "It tasted like soap, but I forced myself to eat the entire case and you know what, I like it, shame its so expensive."

Weirdly I feel like there's a bit in there about how ridiculous we make soap (to smell like food) these days.

I think it's more an acquired taste than anything. My wife used to hate it and wouldn't touch anything with Cilantro in it because of the "soapy" taste. After years of eating in California where everything has cilantro she now likes it and doesn't really remember why she hated it so much.

Close, but I would say it is the opposite of an acquired taste. I think she is losing the taste of cilantro.

I think there is a main misconception about the 10% of us who can taste all of the cilantro flavors. It doesn't just taste like soap. No, instead it tastes like SOAP! It is hard to explain, but the taste receptors are so tuned to cilantro that it tastes 100x (if not 1000x) stronger than any other flavor. It is just a truly overwhelming amount of soap flavor. Most of us cilantro tasters wouldn't even bother to complain if it only tasted of moderate amounts of soap. Sure there is also a background of a light citrus flavor, but your mouth just screams SOAP!

I've gone so far as to make a large pot of intensely thick stick-to-your-ribs spicy chili that I loved*. I then added one small portion of one leaf of cilantro. Stirred it in and let it simmer for an hour. Then every single bite of that large pot of chili was strongly flavored of SOAP!

As I have aged though, the intensity of the soap flavor has diminished. Now cilantro just tastes like soap to me, no more or less intense than other flavors. I don't like the soap flavor but do enjoy that light citrus flavor component. I have been slowly losing my ability to taste cilantro. The opposite of acquiring a taste. I no longer have to avoid anything that had touched cilantro. Or later: painstakingly picking out every leaf. Now I can leave a leaf or two in and still enjoy the rest. Hopefully I fully lose the ability to taste the soap component of cilantro over the next few decades.

* Including beans so that everyone from the south can now discount everything I say in every post.

All it is, is a more potent-tasting close relative of parsley. *(yes, really) BOTH are very healthy too.

What are parsley and cilantro? (Healthline.com)

I don't like cheese (or most dairy) AND am mildly allergic too but you don't see me ragging on all you fans of congealed sour milk that was only even discovered due to spoilage from no refrigeration being available back in the day do I?

Dig in baby! ;)
