The opinion comes from Sheikh Mohamed al-Najimi, of the Islamic Jurisprudence Academy in Saudi Arabia. It is based on the part of Islamic law derived from a statement by the prophet in which dealing with alcohol in any form--including purchase, sale, transport, consumption, and manufacture--is strictly prohibited. The sheikh urged that the issue of ethanol-powered vehicles should be studied by Islamic religious scholars, and stressed that the statement was not a fatwa but simply his own opinion.

Not the antiseptic properties. Alcohol killing bacteria is what I'm talking about. There were (and still are in 3rd world countries) a lot of bad and contaminated water sources.

The most basic division in Islam is between Sunni and Shi'a.

Then just for Sunnis there are multiple schools of law, with the four main ones being:
Shafi'i
Hanbali
Maliki
Hanafi

Plus a bunch of other schools and lots of theological schools of thought. Saudi-supported Wahabi sect in this case.

Talking about Islam as a singular thing is just as ridiculous as if Jews are the same in behavior/dress and interpretations when you have a Reform, Conservative, and Orthodox Jew all in the same room.
