Oriental is for rugs and food. Asian is the most common, but in the South everybody is called Chinese. This is similar to how every soda is called Coke, and every light brown person is a Mexican.

LOL, I had a Mexican roommate from Texas last year that moved up to go to community college in Michigan (really to be near his GF). He was looking for work and I suggest the nearby Chinese restaurant that was hiring. He said, "Don't they usually stay to their own kind?" I asked, "Who?" Then he said, "Orientals." I thought it very funny.

Here we go again. I am old so when we were kids it was normal and acceptable to use the term Oriental. It was not used in a disparaging manner and no disrespect was implied or intended. Since the PC movement it seems everyone in the world has a bug up their ass and demands that verbage be tailored to their liking or they will cry foul and call you a racist or insensitive. Because of all the whiney useless people in the world I make it a point to be unPC. I usually use the term Asian but I reserve the right to slip and say Oriental......but knowing that using Oriental gets certain people's undies in a bundle just makes it all the more appealing to use in my opinion. Thicken you skin people because the world is a tough place and you are merely displaying your inability to compete when you let such silly stuff bother you.

Why don't you go shoot some cats?

It's a reference. When he was a kid he shot cats. I'm sure there were quite a few things he did and said when he was a kid that would offend tons of people unintentionally.

Boy, after you explained it, I realized how well you expressed polite contempt without using white trash generalizations. Thank you.

"Oriental" is for rugs, "Asian" is for people... as far as I know.

No, all rugs are Persian...except when the rugs are people from Persia. Then they're Persians. Oh well, I guess Oriental is for Oriental food like Latin is for Latin food. Oh wait, those crazy Latinos are forming a big Latin group and are cooking the Latin food.

I suppose Oriental people are people from the Oriental part of Asia that aren't too racist to be associated with other people from a different part of Oriental Asia. It seems like black people are ok with being black but Oriental Asians are too worried about being associated with those damn Japanese or Chinese or Korean or Vietnamese or Thai or Taiwanese or Cambodians or any other Oriental group based on the obvious Oriental features. Can?t we all get along? Why is it OK to go to the Orient and describe someone as occidental but not ok to go to the Occident and describe someone as Oriental? Do Oriental Asians feel like they are better than the Persians or the Latinos? Why must the world be so crazy? Why can?t we all just get along?

It isn't a generalization. He actually shot cats and thinks that this is ok behavior. I actually never thought people did this before the outside cat thread.

So you thought that you would just throw it out there that he shot cats. 😕

I'm Chinese/Philippino. When I was growing up, I heard the term "oriental" when referring to people or objeccts. It wasn't until college when the Politically Correct craze really took off did I ever even hear the term "Asian" when referring to people.

I think "Asian" is just a BS PC term, that has unfortunately (based on the responses here) become the prevalent mainstream term. How many Asians look Oriental? Indians are Asian, but I don't think they look "oriental." A lot of Caucasian Russians are Asian, and they don't look Oriental. Asian is a seriously stupid term to use with people if you're trying to describe a certain race or look.

Quoted for Truth.

Good post.

He was saying that it was acceptable when he was younger to call people oriental. Well, it was also, apparently, acceptable to shoot cats. It was a quick way to head off a southern anti-"pc" rant.

the problem is not with the denotation of the words, but the connotation. you are trying to obliterate the histories associated with these words by reintroducing them into regular usage as being "okay" or neutral. these words are not neutral and are not "okay" to use glibly like you contend. sure you may not be a racist, but by trying to be some sort weird nonconformist, you are exhibiting a certain degree of crudeness, if not vulgarity. it hasn't gone "way too far". you don't go around referring to a restroom as "the shitter", do you? don't call me an oriental. the word is outmoded and has negative connotations.

oh and clue for you.

black people were negros. then they became african americans. today they are referred to simply as blacks. and we all know what they were called before negros. if it's so okay to call people whatever, why don't you go to any part of a large city that has a large predominance of blacks, and start calling them by... that one racial slur. i wonder if you will be so okay, then.

blah, blah, blah.

You are a victum of PC.

Black people are negros. Slit eyes are oriental. white people are caucy. Do they not honestly teach this today? Do they not honestly teach and understand why negroloid, mongoloids and caucasians came to be the way they were? Is that part of history just forgotten in the name of PC?

Anthropologist would roll over in the grave at the PC ignorance on race in this thread.

Stop the madness people. Just stop it. Equal but different is a GOOD thing.

Ornamentals...

Not sure why the PC crowd decided that oriental people should be called "Asians", but, since that part of Asia is known as the Orient...I'll consider Japanese, Korean, and Chinese people to be Orientals...as with Laotians, Cambodians, and...well, on good days, even Vietnamese...although that's NOT the wordI was taught for them during boot camp and after...

Most Russians can call themselves "Asian" even if they're blond hair/blue eyes.
Interesting... where'd you hear this / come to know of it ?

Just look at a map of Russia.
Oh ok - I didn't read carefully enough - you said "can call themselves"... rather than do call themselves...
