Charter Communications
5mbps down, 512kbps up
A little over $60/mo for just that internet

Though honestly our cable bill is fucked beyond belief. We had switched it to my roommate's name a while back to get a special, cept he wanted some cable TV also (we normally just get basic cable since it's like $2 more per month than without) but we never got any deal and it's been fucked since. It inched up to like $90/mo, plus there's late fees and reconnection and I can't make sense of it. So yeah, it is pretty expensive but they are the only cable company. Supposedly someone in the same set of apartment buildings as us has 9 meg DSL, but they don't even offer more than 6 meg, but the DSL might be good. Although, most people get awesome specials from Charter, like $15/mo for 5 meg internet for 6 months... we just get hosed heh.

edit: To Chaotic42 and other Charter customers... we actually paid the $59.99 + tax + modem rental for the 3 down/256k up for a while. It seemed faster than that, so one day when switching over to my name since someone was leaving, I got a statement of the account that say

"Free 5 meg preview until 1/31/2008"

I was like, hell yeah! So we've had it for all this time. But honestly I think both Charter at my parents and at my school don't offer 3 meg anymore; 5 meg is the lowest. So like when they dropped their really slow 384k down service, they upgraded anyone with it to the next speed with no change in pricin. So I think they're doing the same thing this time, for anyone who's seen their Charter doesn't offer 3 meg anymore.

I hope this is true, but I'm still registering about 3.2mb from SpeakEasy Speed Test

On Charter's website, they list this....

Charter High-Speed Internet Services
Charter High-Speed offers multiple Internet speed options to suit your specific needs. The Internet speed you choose can be connected to one computer in your home via a cable modem. If you would like to connect multiple computers to the Internet at the same time, you can select Wireless Home Networking later in the ordering process and connect up to five computers at once.

Charter High-Speed® Internet 10 Mbps

We don't even have HD service here. Charter is really behind the times. I just did a test and it's 3000/215.

Just talked to Charter LIVE real quick..... Read numbers from the bottom up!

3---- Emily: Yes, they must added the 5Meg preview which means they are paying for 3Meg but have 5Meg services. However, the price will go up for them after Feb to a regular 5Meg price.

2---- Me: Well, I'm paying $43.99/mth here for 3mb.
I've been hearing that some people are getting upgraded free from 3mb to 5 mb if they have the 3mb service.

1---- Emily: With the 5Meg services is $49.99/month. Even better, you could get the 5Meg for $14.99/mo for the first 6 months.

It's just not worth it to me. That's another $6.00 to the bill. No thanks. 3mb is just fine.

Just now did a speed test, on my Roadrunner cable:
6775 down/340 up
Not sure what their plan is, but that's a good day. If they're having problems with their system, I've actually seen it slower than dialup. Lucky for them, those days are few & far between! ;)
Oh yeah, cost is ~$47/month

3. $45
DSL is the only way around here, the cable lines weren't laid properly when the houses went up.

1. Comcast
2. 6 Mbps (I actually get almost 9 Mbps)
3. $42.95

My Internet rate just dropped from $57.95 and increased from 4 Mbps. They called and added Basic Cable to my account for $5.99 for a net savings to me. However, they pulled a bit of a fast one on me, because my latest billing statement leads me to believe that there is no more Basic Cable and that I'm going to end up with Limited Basic for $14.99 and end up right where I was.

It helps that I'm the only one on the block with cable. Everyone else has NSA DSL.

When will ppl understand that this is a myth. I live in an apartment I know 80% of the folks here have comcast. thats like saying cuz everyone has cable tv, your cable reception sucks.

What myth? The more people there are on a single cable node, the slower the speeds can be.

From wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cable_internet

There are two potential disadvantages to cable internet:

1) Like all residential broadband network technologies (e.g. DSL, FTTX, Satellite internet, WiMAX), a fixed channel capacity is shared by a population of users (in the case of cable internet, users in a neighborhood share the available capacity provided by a single coaxial cable line). Therefore, service speed can vary depending on how many people are using the service at the same time. This arrangement allows the network operator to take advantage of statistical multiplexing in order to provide an adequate level of service at an acceptable price. However, the operator has to monitor usage patterns, and scale the network appropriately, to ensure that customers receive adequate service even during peak usage times. Some operators also use a bandwidth cap.
