The point of zipping media files which are hosted is to prevent streaming and simply allow people to download them rather than having whatever random plug-in may have taken over that media type in the browser from playing them automatically.

At least that's the reason I .zip media files I post on my site and blog. It's sad how many people can't right-click > save or change their browser settings, so .zip helps deal with this IMO.
