This scares me everytime I play volleyball

Hello,

My friend was at this volleyball tournament last weekend and goes up for a hit. Seems like everything was normal, then his knee just snaps the wrong way. The whole week I've been worrying about it happening to me. He ended up tearing 3 of the 4 ligaments that hold your knee together. Link for those with strong stomaches. This ever happen to anyone here?

don't play if you don't wanna risk it, although the odds are probably pretty small. It's just jumping for the most part, unless you come down wrong.

Any sport which requires physical movement has its risks. Volley ball is pretty low risk in my opinion though, not too much to worry about.

not the same thing, but back when I was on high school vball team I sustained an interesting injury.

I was playing setter (3) with back to net.
opponents serve
receiver (6) mishandles ball and put it on the net
I see 2 shadows behind me going up
I jump and twist
2 gorillas slam me down instead of the ball
my legs were crossed and I am falling
Land on the plantar surface (topside) of my right foot
snap was heard in the next 2 courts and play was stopped on all 3 courts.
I did not make a sound because I was busy sucking air
hairline fractured the ball joint head.

ps it is entirely possible to tear your ligaments just by jumping too hard.

I work for a company that makes knee braces for anyone from NFL players (I could name a few NFL QB's who wear/have worn our braces) to weekend warriors and we just love knee injuries. 😛

Seriously though, a knee injury is probably one of the most debilitating joint injuries you can suffer. I would try to avoid it at all cost because chances are you will never be 100% after suffering a serious one.

nope. this has never happened to anyone here while playing volleyball or else....

they would've made a thread about it. 😛

Sprained ankles are fairly common in volleyball, but otherwise, it's a pretty safe sport.

That's not that disgusting. This is disgusting.

I've played it for years and never had a serious injury nor did I see anyone else getting injured. However the joints in my fingers did get sore a few times when I played setter position.

I have never torn the ligaments in my knee(s), but both do pop out of socket from time to time (usually when I twist wrong.) I have extremely week knees from playing catcher from tee-ball through high school. When it pops out, it is extremely painful.

I have torn ligaments and a tendon in my left ankle in a bike accident. A few months of PT, and I could at least walk normal. I still have problems with it.

Guess what, you could tear some ligaments when you get out of bed in the morning by twisting wrong. Do you still get out of bed in the morning?

Deal with it. Life has risks. Shit happens. If you enjoy the sport, then play it. Just make sure to play the sport the right way, and avoid doing stupid stuff. If it happens it does, but it could happen anyways.

Worse volleyball injury I've ever had was a really pulled gluteous maximus (well and a broken nose). Trust me, you really don't want to have a bad pull on that muscle, it hurts like hell and takes a long time to heal.

I played pretty competitively and it wasn't uncommon for guys to be wearing a knee brace from previous injury.

I remember back in law school when I used to play racquetball, went to the gym one day and walked by one court where 3 guys were huddled around something on the floor. Foolishly I peeked my head in to look and saw a guy writhing in pain on the floor with what looked to be his ankle bone jutting out the side of his leg. I don't know how it happened, I don't wanna know how it happened, and that day I decided to skip playing racquetball. Still gives me shudders thinking about it.

I have weak knees also. When I was a kid I played catcher in baseball, and goalie in hockey. Basically, I did everything I could to destroy my knees (not knowing then of course).

Mine pops out for no real reason at all. The last two times were 1) I was grabbing luggage out of a trunk, and basically just collapsed, and 2) I went into a dry creekbed to grab my girlfriends golf ball (she still feels bad about this), and it popped out while climbing out (2-3 foot lip).

The only good part about the golf story is that I had hit to the green off the tee, and I hobbled over and sunk a 30 foot birdie put while barely able to stand. I have never hit a put that long before (and since), and that time I actually hit it so hard I was going to miss by at LEAST 10 feet long if I hadn't hit centre cup. Sadly I had to walk back to the clubhouse because I'm a stupid idiot with pride, and couldn't walk for the next couple days because of it.

I am very afraid that my knee will give out while going down stairs, or standing in the shower, because my body just crumples when it happens.

I played volleyball at a fairly high level for about 10 years, worst injury I had was a twisted ankle.

Twisted ankle was weekly occurrence for me. Played on concrete slap that sat on dirt. So you step on the edge of the slab which has about 10cm edge from the line and your ankle will be twisted.

Sounds like an ACL tear. I had the same thing few years ago. Go to doc, get MRI, possible surgery.

I have had some knee injuries from Vball. That video you showed is why you shouldn't hit balls behind your head. This is why proper form is so important. The kid took a shot at a ball that was too far behind and to the side making him arch backwards in a bad position. This causes a bad, uneven landing risking injury like this. I proper spike always goes up with 2 feet and lands with 2 feet with the contact point of the ball slightly in front of your head.

One thing about Vball too is you have to learn how to properly fall and dive. Not doing so results in common injuries to wrists, knees, ankles, and elbows. Impact to the floor should be spread out as much as possible.

That'll do it. Being a libero my twisted ankle frequency was pretty low - I only ever twisted my ankle playing doubles.

I can't put skates on properly since my ankles are too wide... so I am wobbly as hell on skates.

how the hell did I manage to type slap instead of slab. Unless the computer flipped the letter for me 😛
