This question has been bothering me

As topic states.

It makes no sense to me. A hat is just as much of an accessory as say... an earring or a belt with an extra large buckle.

Can someone answer this and explain why? Or give the history behind why it is such.

no, a hat is something to protect you from the sun or cold. both of which are problems you face outside.

From some people's POV (height related, I'd guess) hats are a method of avoiding eye-contact during discussion, which is considered impolite.
At least, that's how I look at it.

I think baseball hats are fine, but people wearing winter hats indoors when it's 65 F outside are just stupid.

i heard it was from medieval times. a knight would remove his helmet before the king to show he was willing to expose himself. same idea why christians remove hats before prayers outside, and muslim men wear no hats (generally); to expose themselves fully before god.

I remove my hat anytime I enter a building with the exception of malls and such. It is more of a sign of respect than anything. You do it to show respect. However people who are used to the "rule" may become offended if you don't remove it. The rules are diferent for women. Google "hat etiquette" for the history.

Edit: Also hats (mens) used to serve more utilitarian (sp? oh well I'm drunk :beer:

If you go into a Courthouse, the Baliffs will tell you "Remove your hat please." It's just common courtesy.

Only disrespectful punk kids wear hats indoors. Even Bubba Cowboys know to take off the hat when they come thru the front door.

Then you are disadvantaged.
In fact. that is a subtle reason why folks comply. you see if they knwo better, they do it.

Just like a person's accent, it is another cue as to someoen's social status. Snobby; I know, but that has a lot to do with why.

Yea, a cop was on my ass about wearing a cap in court.
Took it off, went outside put it back on and forgot to take it off.
He was on the other side of the room as he was walking towards me I realized what it was and took it off.

I wear it indoors because it's worn as i'm walking into wherever i'm going.
Plus I dont have a place usually to put my Oakleys.
I'd much rather be wearing them then carrying them around and damaging them.

Good question. I've often wondered myself. I feel it's outdated. I usually keep my cap on most of the time. I have gotten the "take your hat off" when we've sat down to eat on several occasions, from some in our group. Sometimes I comply.
