This ought to be amusing....red light cameras now installed in Dekalb County.

I'm waiting for all the local news channels to run stories where they interview "outraged" motorists. I have to cross a busy intersection on my way to work every morning and anywhere from 1-5 people run the light every single time. I don't particularly like the idea of cameras all over the place, but it would be nice if folks would stop driving like psychos here for a change. Now all they need to do is figure out how to keep everyone under 100mph on I-285.

A motorist was mailed a picture of his car speeding
through an automated radar. A $40 speeding ticket was included.
Being cute, he sent the police department a picture of $40. The
police responded with another mailed photo of Handcuffs.

A policeman had a perfect spot to watch for speeders, but wasn't
getting many. Then he discovered the problem-a 10 year old boy was
standing up the road with a hand painted sign which read "RADAR
TRAP AHEAD." The officer then found a young accomplice down the
road with a sign reading "TIPS" and a bucket full of change.

A young woman was pulled over for speeding. As the
motorcycle officer walked to her car window, flipping open his
ticket book, she said, "I bet you are going to sell me a ticket to
the Highway Patrolmen's Ball," He replied, "Highway patrolmen don't
have balls." There was a moment of silence while she smiled, and he
realized what he'd just said. He then closed his book, got back on
his motorcycle and left. She was laughing too hard to start her car
for several minutes.

As long as they DON'T do what a couple other cities were caught doing (decreasing the yellow light time concurrently with installing the cameras), I guess I'm OK with the cameras.

I don't like them, but I don't like assholes who run reds either.

if driving weren't something that anyone who just fell out of a tree could qualify for we wouldn't have this problem.

I'm going to be spending a week in Atlanta in either October or November. All these horror stories of insane traffic sort of concern me

Yeah, I'm a tad leery of these things, but I guess if it calms people down it's a good thing. I see people run this intersection by a full two seconds of red light on a regular basis.....not a good thing when you're me (on a mountain bike) trying to cross the damn road on your way to work. I generally have a nice morning loogie in reserve for the windshields of such flagrant offenders. :D

Hehe....it's not that bad for a visit, it just gets aggravating when you live here and have to deal with it on a daily basis.

Look me up when you're here, I'd be happy to show you around a bit. :)

Yeh, but I'm from Iowa. On my way to work, all I have to share the road with is 4 cars, a couple farm tractors pulling implements, a few semi's, and the occasional horse drawn buggy.

Red means stop. Since when did they change red to "you're allowed to pass through it 5 seconds after it turns red, narrowly missing a family of 6 on their way back from Six Flags". Fvck those motorists - let them b1tch all they want about the tickets they get.

I'm glad they are doing this. The ACLU zealots should have a field day with this, but it is definitely warranted around here.

Just like Fausto1 said, every day I drive to work (in Dekalb) and have to wait at a red light, at LEAST 1-5 people run the light turning left. I just want to get out of the car and beat down some of these people. And if you honk at them, they look at you like you are an idiot. Morons.

I always have been firmly against traffic lights. I disagree with the manufacturing company's getting a percentage of the 'take' from each camera. I also disagree with the principle in general. I'm all for active, highly visible deterrance, but cameras scare me. What's next? A camera in everyone's home to make sure no one commits a crime? Sure, they're a far cry from each other...but that's how these things go. In small steps. I don't know...maybe I've read 1984 one too many times...

That's bullsh!t.

Well, at lteast the owner of the car will think twice in the future when he loans his car to assholes. And he could always demand that the driver compensates him.

Like I said, I'm not too happy about the camera thing either, but drastic problems call for drastic measures. Atlanta is going to implode in the next 5-10 years if they don't get a handle on traffic. It is widely considered the number one problem in this city. Obviously, the first solution we would look to would be a greater police force, but we don't have the money for that thanks to our ultra-corrupt former mayor Bill Campbell having put the city so far in debt doling out huge contracts to his buddies :|. Since there's spotty (at best) enforcement thanks to the limited manpower, a permanent deterrent is the next best solution. Oh well.

Yeah, you say that until your car gets stolen and you start getting parking tickets in the mail... (long story, I got the car back, but it was gone for 3 days w/o my consent.)

I'm pretty sure that if your car gets stolen you are NOT liable for anything that the criminals do with the car. If you are, then the law needs adjusting.
