i just read that the German government ordered all flags flying at half mast 'til January 3rd in wake of the recent catastrophe in asia. Afaik 26 or so Germans were confirmed killed and 2000-3000 are still missing.
I also know that a small number of Americans is confirmed dead with some thousand US citizens still missing.
Why cant the Americans show similiar compassion.....this is a major disaster with 80000+ dead as of now ?
For some reason it just stunned me that my former home country did that, the current cancellor even aborted his christmas vacation to meet with his crisis staff because of the catastrophe.
Did there *anything* similiar come from our country (US) or did i miss it in the news ?
Maybe it would be a good thing if this country starts to be compassionate, for example by putting all offcial flags at half-mast (well i dont know the rules/laws regarding this)...but it would maybe benefit the general "notion" the this country just cares for itself and less for others...

Edit: 01/1/05: I just read on cnn that Bush " called Saturday for flags to be flown at half-staff next week to honor victims of the disaster.
