this one kind of stunned me (asia tsunami)

i just read that the German government ordered all flags flying at half mast 'til January 3rd in wake of the recent catastrophe in asia. Afaik 26 or so Germans were confirmed killed and 2000-3000 are still missing.

I also know that a small number of Americans is confirmed dead with some thousand US citizens still missing.

Why cant the Americans show similiar compassion.....this is a major disaster with 80000+ dead as of now ?

For some reason it just stunned me that my former home country did that, the current cancellor even aborted his christmas vacation to meet with his crisis staff because of the catastrophe.

Did there *anything* similiar come from our country (US) or did i miss it in the news ?

Maybe it would be a good thing if this country starts to be compassionate, for example by putting all offcial flags at half-mast (well i dont know the rules/laws regarding this)...but it would maybe benefit the general "notion" the this country just cares for itself and less for others...

my $0.2

Edit: 01/1/05: I just read on cnn that Bush " called Saturday for flags to be flown at half-staff next week to honor victims of the disaster.

yeah! fvck big bad america! look how evil america is, they dont even have their flags at half staff. what has america done, all they have done was donated 35million and spent counltess more by sending a naval task force to the indian ocean to deliver aid and assist the wounded, but other than that i can think of anything.

man, america is so evil!

The $$$ IS MORE IMPORTANT! The US donated $35 million, the EU gave 3 million Euro. Flying flags at half staff is not going to rebuild a coastline.

The United States is offering a total of $35 million, followed by Japan with $30 million. Australia has now pledged $27 million, Saudi Arabia $10 million and Germany $2.7 million.

Did you want the Pres to convene congress or somethin? Jeez,
:disgust:

American flags where flown at 1/2 mast over 6months of last year. It's usually done for deaths of our government officials, or homeland catastrophy's, it is a shame all those people were killed/injured/homeless, but I can see why we aren't flying our flags at 1/2 mast. I have been praying for those that have lost loved ones and for those lost.

ummmm us is spending BILLIONS of dollars per MONTH in the war in iraq...

and a measly 35 mill? especially when american reputation is shot in the world community?

to be honest, they are lucky they are getting anything. a donation is exactly that, a donation. we are OBLIGATED to spend the money in iraq. its different.

ummm Germany does not have it's hands tied in a war right now, and a measly 3 million? Oh, but they're flags are at half mast though.

I know I know, everything the US does (or does not do) is wrong. Sorry. How much have you donated?

Regardless of what the government does...I am curious about the general American populus thinks about this. I know that it has been on my mind quite frequently. But many of my friends dont think its a real big news.

What if they looked like us?

Well it has certainly been the biggest news story lately. And yeah all of my friends do think that it is really such a big deal. I dunno, I'm in college and so are my friends so maybe we are just smarter and more compassionate than the rest of you. 😛

but its ok since their flags are at half staff, i wish america was that compassionate!

Lowering flags to half-staff won't accomplish jack.

The US is donating 15mil dollars and sending warships to supply fresh drinking water.

The best way for distribution of resources is to use channels that already exist.

I'd also guess that the US is doing more work and stuff behind the scenes. Disaster coordination, distrubution plans, etc. are more important than looking good in front of the camera.

Function>appearance

by the way you are forgetting that india is not only helping itself but helping srilanka and maldieves.

i am quite amazed that hasnt made the news yet.
