This may sound stupid... but... (Corn on the Cob) Update: Test results in!

Two minutes if you like it sweet, five minutes if you like it soft.

You must put the corn in cold water, then cook it :)

Until it's heated all the way thru. About 10 minutes for the little "half ears" and 15 for full size. At least that how I cook it. I'm still alive, so I assume I'm correct.

Mike, your are cooking it too long, all the flavor will be boiled right out of it.

Hmm.. I put the cobs in when it was warm(been on the burner maybe a minute), but not boiling.. It'll probably be ok.

Sounds good.

That's fine as long as you don't get the water to a rolling boil first :)

Two minutes? That barely boils off the parasites...

Paranoia will destroy ya ;)

Try eating corn raw, it's super sweet but very tough.

90 seconds at 212°F will kill anything on the corn, unless you buy some kind of weird black market Cambodian reject corn.

Hmmmmm....

Ok, time for a test. ;)

I'm going to eat one after 2 minutes (which is right now), one after 5 minutes, and one after ~12 minutes.. and compare. lol

That sounds cool! I suspect Roger is right as my corn on the cob is rather....mushy and bland. I fix that though with copious amounts of butter, salt and pepper! :D

Don't forget to smother it in lots of butter :)

The longer you cook it, the less sweet it tastes and the easier it is to eat.

I ate them all. :p And cleaned up my mess, like a good roommate.. lol

And I must say, wow. By far, the tastiest was the 2 minute cob. I couldn't even get my fork stuck into it to bring it out of the water. And.. it squirted corn juice all over the kitchen window(was eating over the sink).

The 5 minute cob came out easier, and was definately softer(easier to eat), but you could notice the difference in sweetness.

The 12 minute cob was VERY noticably less tastier than the previous two.

Of course, the prerequisite slathering of butter and salt was performed.

you people shouldn't be boiling corn. Steaming is where it's at. Steam a full ear for about 7 minutes or until the inside is HOT after you break the ear in half. It will be sweet and tastier than boiling.

I imagine so, but I don't have a steamer.

steamer = big pot or pan with lid
Put water in pot. Put rack or ovenproof bowl in pot. Put plate'o'corn on top of rack/bowl.
Steam till it's done

:D

We cook it camping by wrapping the whole ear(leaves and all) in tinfoil and sticking it next to the fire. WOrks great.

I carry one of these in my Bus in case of emergencies.

Yeah, those are cool. We made a solar oven in 8th grade shop class, lol.. Ours groups reached the 2nd highest temperature, 246F in 45 minutes IIRC. #1 group was something like 257F.. they used a spoon, and got their reflector really smooth and.. reflective .. heh.

How are they effected by wind, I wonder? We usually go camping either in the mountains(limited sun), or at the beach(quite windy).. lol

But I agree, it would be invaluble in an emergency. I've always been survival minded, I keep just about everything "incase we need it later".. ;)

I can browse military surplus sites for hours.. lol

"You know they call corn on the cob, corn on the cob, but that's how it comes out of the ground, man. They should call that corn, they should call every other version corn off the cob. It's not like if you cut off my arm you would call it Mitch. Then reattach it and call me Mitch-all-together..." - Mitch Hedberg

Leave it in the shuck and then pop it on the top rack of the grill

Man, thats the most flavorful corn ive ever had. Got to watch it though or else the shuck will catch on fire, but since you aren't boiling it you wont be eating tap water.
