This is why people dislike cyclists

I was driving home from work and came to a 4 way stop. On my side of the stop there was a left turn\straight lane and a right turn only lane. Between the two was a dedicated bike lane. All roads involved in the 4 way stop have dedicated bike lanes. The following happened in about 30 seconds.

Enter cyclist one:
Uses bike lane. Great!
Blows through stop sign without stopping. WTF asshole.

Enter cyclist two:
Ignores dedicated bike lane and decides to instead stay near the curb on the otherside of the right turn only lane. Blows past a car turning right causing them to stop suddenly to avoid his illegal path and his failure to properly yield at a stop sign.

Enter cyclist three:
Says "fuck you" to all the dedicated bike lanes and illegally uses the pedestrian only sidewalk\crosswalk. (Local law that bikes cannot use the sidewalk if a bike lane is provided)

It being summer means I regularly have days where 100% of the cyclists I encounter as a motorist are ignoring whatever law(s) they feel don't apply to them but this was the first time I had 3 unrelated riders ignoring different laws in such a short time.

I predict this thread will go well.

I couldn't agree with you more. I live in a very walk/bike friendly neighborhood. Bicyclists routinely think they are above the law and break all kinds of rules. Pisses me off all the time.

And this is coming from an avid mountain biker with a ton of road bike friends.

Seconded.

Although, to be fair, motor vehicle drivers are the same way. However, they are easier to see and are a bit more predictable making them easier to deal with.

I'm not saying that motorists are guilt free at all, but the flagrance of the bicyclists is way beyond what I see in motorists in a given day. I'm not against bicycling at all and wish more people did it. I just want them to be held accountable to the rules (and more bicyclists chastising the members who flaunt the rules).

I equate it to mountain bikers who don't give right away on paths or ride on wet trails...I as a mountain biker have a responsibility to chastise these people as they are doing all of us a disservice.

They dare you to hit them. I often envision the glorious crunching sound it would make.

I think that bike riders have the same amount of assholes as any other group. Plenty of jerks behind the wheel too.

Not worried about the lawsuit?

OR, the amount of time and money you'd have to put out just to defend yourself?

Motorists generally act as if the rules of the road are only for other people (speeding as a matter of routine, parking anywhere they feel like, ignoring rules on priority, jumping red-lights so often they don't even notice themselves doing it, using mobile phones while driving...).

And here in the UK about 30,000 a year die prematurely due to traffic pollution, plus several thousand more killed in road accidents (most of which are officially down to mistakes by drivers) while God knows how many die due to the physical inactivity driving everywhere promotes.

While cyclists kill about one pedestrian every 10 years or so.

But sure, cyclists are the problem. Keep telling yourselves that. They also cause congestion, right, not the cars that actually constitute that congestion, no, of course not.

The reason you notice bad behaviour by cyclists is because they are an outgroup, and drivers generally have trained themselves to not even see their own group's habitual ignoring of the rules.

Oh and cyclists don't use many bike lanes because they tend to be unusable - e.g. giving way to every single side-road or driveway.

Edit - I don't even cycle, I'm speaking as a pedestrian, largely. As a pedestrian you quickly notice how reckless and arrogant most drivers are. The occasional stupid cyclist is trivial compared to the problem created by his kindred spirit behind the wheel.

OP, do you also get butthurt when a car blows a stop sign or turns right when there's a no turn on red? How about jaywalkers? Or cars driving at night without their lights on?

Lots of reasons to be butthurt but cyclist one and three are not good ones.

Sounds about right. Cyclists need to all be hit by a car to understand why what they do is stupid. I hate cyclists.

And when they are not on their bicycles, they are in their Prius'.
I am not sure if owning a Prius makes you a dick or if dicks are drawn to Prisus'.

I'm a cyclists and I agree. I'm one of the few in So Cal that obey rules of the road.

Cyclists culture also sucks. Every time I come across a group ride, I get a bunch of dickbags that call me a FRED.

I've done enough traffic enforcement to tell you that (where I was) the percentage of cyclists that cruise through stop signs far exceeds the percentage of cars that do the same.

Yes to all the above. Although to me it's worse then that actual violation when you have someone creating a justification for why they don't need to stop at a stop sign or obey other traffic laws. If you're someone (regardless of vehicle type) who blows through a stop sign you are the scum of the earth and I would both have no pity for you being flattened and would be forcing your estate to pay for the repair costs to whoever hits you.

Are the non-Freds the ones that dress like circus clowns?

If you think it's bad there, move to Portland. They run the city.

I've been driving the motorhome up/down Hwy 101 on the Oregon coast this week. (down to Pacific City on Monday, up to Seaside today) and running around in the car. Fucking bicyclists are everywhere on the highway...even though MOST stay in the tiny bike lane/shoulder, the highway is pretty narrow in spots, so people either crowd the oncoming lane, or slow down to a crawl to get by them. (I know that as much as I hate bicyclists on the roadway, I don't want to run one over...takes too long to get the rig clean afterwards...and the paperwork is a nightmare!)

If bicyclists want to ride on the roadway, they should be taxed heavily to pay for dedicated (and separate) bike lanes.

If the cyclists are ignoring traffic signs and not yielding, don't complain...the problem will eventually work itself out. What's really sad is I knew a girl who's father was a cyclist. He was riding on a busy 2 lane highway on the shoulder and was side-swiped by a careless driver and that ended his life.

I actually like bike lanes around here at 4-5am because there are no bikes in them and I can run in them facing oncoming traffic... (the way pedestrians are supposed to walk/run in the street) In my town, bike lines often exist when sidewalks don't. What bothers me most is when I'm running on a sidewalk and then the sidewalk ends with no alternative but to run/walk in the street. (due to landscaping, extreme hill, or drop off) My city really sucks for foot traffic....but yeah...they put in bike lanes that are rarely used.

They already pay taxes to fund road construction. Do you really think your vehicle licensing and gas taxes are solely responsible for paying for the roads?

So...uh...are you arguing with yourself? No one said anything about congestion in here

Unless you happen to know the area I am referring to this has no relevance on whether these cyclists used the bike lanes or not. But its obvious you don't as the bike lanes here don't give way to every single side-road or driveway.

Butthurt? No but then I am not butthurt in this thread either although I reguarly see cyclists blow through stop signs whereas the drivers I encounter obey them 99% of the time.
