The Lake County State's Attorney's office said this morning it's looking into criminal charges against a woman who this weekend allegedly was painting her fingernails as she drove and fatally struck a stopped motorcyclist.

"We are looking into charges in the case," said Assistant State's Atty. Patricia Fix, "but we are waiting for results of blood and urine tests and waiting for the results of an accident reconstruction, as well as any other technical evidence we can derive from the scene."

Authorities say Anita Zaffke, of the 1500 block of Eddy Lane in Lake Zurich, stopped at the intersection of Route 12 and Old McHenry Road at around 5:45 p.m. Saturday, as the traffic light turned from green to yellow.

The driver of a Chevrolet Impala behind Zaffke, Lora Hunt, 48, of Morris, told police "she was painting her nails as she drove and did not see [the motorcycle] until contact was already made," according to a Lake County Sheriff's Department incident report.
Zaffke, who was wearing a helmet, was thrown a distance from her Honda motorcycle, according to Lake County Coroner Dr. Richard Keller. Her son, Greg, said this morning his mother was also wearing a bright yellow cycling jacket.

"It appears to be a tragic accident and it appears [Zaffke] did nothing wrong," Lake County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Scott Morrison said Sunday. "She was just in the wrong place at the wrong time and she could not have done anything to avoid it."

Zaffke died about an hour after the crash at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, Keller said. An autopsy was scheduled for this morning.

Hunt was cited with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. She could not be reached for comment this morning.

ok so she was PAINTING her nails and killed the person on the bike. Hopefully they charge her with manslaughter and she NEVER gets her license back again. not to mention the civil suit that takes eveyr fucking thing she owns.

i get pissed when i see people texting, putting on makeup or such. hell one time i seen a guy shaving! WTF i was so tempted to cut him off and see if he cut himself heh.

While this is certainly a tragedy and I grieve for the family of the motorcyclist, if I stopped doing everything that posed a risk of death or injury I'd never get out of bed in the morning. If you enjoy riding, you should, IMO, continue to ride.

i love riding. but far to many people are idiots. it was getting to the point i couldnt go on a ride without worrying about some idiot on the phone.

then again being in 2 really bad wrecks don't help hehe

Yea the guy that pulled out in front of me did not even hit his brakes until I hit the side of his SUV. Someone at the scene said he was on a cell phone.

Never had the money for another bike but as Zen said there are risks in everything you do. I would love to get another bike.

i quit riding when my twins were born and i couldnt afford a new carb rack for my bike. it still sits in my back yard, someday i will be on 2 wheels again. as for this accident, that really sucks. i sure hope they do something about her glaring negligence, failure to avoid an accident is hardly enough in this case. thats also why i watched behind me at every stop light just in case. ive had to gun it into the crosswalk before, but the alternative would have been ugly for me. not everyone is that paranoid, but that paranoia serves me well most of the time.

automotive homocides have _always_ been treated with more leaniency than any other crime related to death.

Which is ridiculous. People who cause these accidents are a menace to society. They should be thrown in jail for a couple years to think things over and then never be allowed to drive again.

Ugh..that is why I stay in the dirt for now 🙁

I would love to ride street, but i know too many people who have wrecked, and there are too many bad drivers in SoCal.

Ditto that. I saw too many car vs. motorcycle accidents and the car ALWAYS wins. I sold my last street bike about 10 years ago and have been dirt only since then. I still bounce off trees and rocks, but at least I can control how hard I hit them.

At least you don't have to warry about a tree running a light or talking on a log phone and not seeing you. Anything that happens while riding on dirt is your own damn fault.

I haven't ridden in a few years. I gave up after to many close calls and having a guy next to me get taken out. I do want to get a dirt bike though.

I remember when I was doing news in Southern Indiana several years ago, a guy on a crotch rocket was riding down a rural road. He was speeding and a woman pulled out of her driveway without looking. When she did see him, it was too late for him to slow down and she just sat there, blocking the road.

He lived, but they had to scrape him off of the road. I don't remember if she got charged, but I'm sure she's never going to be the same.

same thing happened to my neighbor when i was in high school... he had his cousin on the back at the time, both flew over the handlebars. my neighbor got pushed down by his cousin flying over him, something on the handlebars caught his sac and ripped it open. they had to search the street for his left one, but it wasnt able to be reattached (reinserted?) for some reason. he sold his bike after that.

Similar thing happened to my cousin when he was much younger, only it was on a bicycle. He had been messing with the handlebar height and didn't get them lined up straight with the front wheel. He decided to ride anyway but for some reason needed to look down and watch the wheel to see if he was going straight. Ran smack into the back of a parked and unoccupied car and split his sac open on the handlebar nut (who says the universe doesn't have a sense of humor).

The way he tells it, nothing fell out, and there are no witnesses to say for sure. He did need stitches though and he was walking funny for a few weeks. He's got a kid now though, so either there was no damage or his mailman has been busy. 😛
