This is where I was an altar boy during the tumultuous 60s.

Exterior pics of the church and some still pics of the inside and organ. The spire is 240 feet high. The church is massive and really dominates the neighborhood still.😎

Now some rotating panoramas.

Here is the choir, with doors leading to the sacristy (where priests get changed (we the altar boys got changed in a special room down in the church basement).

And here is the main part of the church, where the worshippers assemble. It's called the nave, which in French we call, wait for it... la nef :sneaky: as seen from the crossing/transept.

Here is the view from the pulpit (la chaire). You can see the massive organ at the back of the church. When I first started attending church ~1960-1961, my mom and the rest of us children sat in the balcony as the main floor was packed with people during Sunday mass. Now there are a lot fewer people going to church.

Here is one of the side altars.

We moved when I was 21yo in 1978 but I still recall vividly going to that church for almost two decades. The impressive gothic architecture of the cavernous interior and the booming sound of the huge organ left a profound impression on my young mind. 🙂

at least it obviously looks like a church.

you know the trend i hate? churches that look like libaries, schools, or hell, low security prison complexes. seriously, saw an example just today in a 'classier' neighborhood. sprawling two story complex. no steeple or religious symbols except for one raised cross like a half mile from the road. sign out front has a black background with silver lettering and looks like it's for a business park or something.

This. Regardless of what you think of religion, church, or Catholicism, you have to acknowledge the architecture and art is amazing.

That church looks fantastic! It is very similar in design to the old churches in Poland. There is a section in the front of the church, behind the white marble gate, with chairs off to the left and right sides. What is that section for? Who are those chairs for?

That is the chancel part of the choir, where the current altar is. The main altar is in the sanctuary at the back of the choir. Nowadays a new altar in the chancel is used so the priest can face the congregation (whereas using the main altar way at the back in olden times meant he had often his back to the people). The benches are for the choir (people who sing), other clergy and the altar boys. However, by the time I was around in the 60s, the choir was singing mostly from beside the organ, way at the back of the church. The fence separating the choir from the nave is called a balustrade. Up to the early 70s, that is where we went to kneel to receive communion in our mouth from the priests who stood behind it. Now the priest stands in front of it in the transect at the front of the nave and people receive communion in their hands while standing.

No, I'm sure that one of them is a little more sad and pathetic than the others. You just need to think about it more.

while what he did was disgusting its done. he paid his for his "crime".

I find such post as the original interesting. its neat to look back on positive stuff and share it. Not every fucking post here has to be negitive, "offbeat" or a nef.

i love looking at "old" churches. modern ones just lack the Awe that many old ones do.

I just looked at the 360 degree view. Op, that church is beautiful.

Exactly. Everytime I visit a different city I like to attend Catholic mass at a good church in town.

The last one was:

San Fernando Cathedral has always been at the center of San Antonio. It is a special place that occupies a unique position in this city and for the many visitors who come by the thousands every year.

From its founding on March 9, 1731 by a group of 15 families who came from the Canary Islands at the invitation of King Phillip V of Spain, this church was planned to be at the center of the life of this city.
San Fernando Cathedral functions not exclusively as a Catholic Cathedral, but as a center of unity and harmony for all the God-loving people of San Antonio and beyond.

Over 5,000 participate at weekend Masses each week of the year. Over 900 baptisms, 100 weddings, 100 funerals, and countless other services are performed each year. Symphonies, concerts, and television specials are but a few of the special events held in the cathedral regularly. Hundreds of people enter the church daily to pray, visit, light a candle, or follow various devotional traditions. Tour buses arrive constantly. Each person is a part of the story of this magnificent place and a tribute to its enduring presence as the spiritual center of San Antonio.

I visited during its 275th birthday. Pope Benedict the 16th granted an indulgence to anyone who properly attended. That was in November 2006. Within the next six months I turned $7,000 into $65,000. That was quite a blessing indeed. ()🙂

Thanks. I thought some people would enjoy looking at it. 🙂 When I was a kid, the festoon atop the lower part of the columns looked like some grotesque face. Still does.

back in my home town, and this isn't a unique phenomenon, the spread of the the mega-congregations has seen new church's taking up house in Old Holiday Inns or other defunct hotel/motel branches.

You see a hotel, but the only difference is a sign for "Eagle's Nest Faithful Congregation of Christ the Loving Despot" or some other bullshit.

sad
