Ahh, I probably took your hash tag #borninlewronggeneration too seriously.

Theres nothing wrong with listening to and enjoying pop culture from decades that arent your own but you will always miss the context. Its a dead thing, preserved and sterile. Its far better to immerse yourself in something vibrant and living when youre young, something that you can be a part of, something that you can influence and grow with.

Depends on what a person gets out of it. I don't really care about cultural/pop relevance; for example, I'm a big fan of 80s metal, and the vast majority of it had virtually no significance outside of its own little niche. There was a lot of metal that went by in relative obscurity that has actually gained more fans today thanks to the internet and greater ease of forming indie labels. Now there are small movements of retro bands playing true to the style of what others played 30 years ago. I appreciate music, movies, cartoons, or anything else on its own merits.

In terms of being a part of the culture and influencing it, that's something limited to artists and creators, something the vast majority of people do not participate in, unless we're just talking about viewership/ad-money.

Yeah, whatever you say Mr. "I know the bass player from Derketa". I fully expect another PM from you addressing your insecurities in being called out.

I know the bass player from Derketa. I made a mistake about another band she was working for when I thought she was the bassist for them.

I don't really have insecurities.

Where did I pine for the 80s? Does art suddenly disappear or become irrelevant beyond its time of creation? Even putting the internet aside, there's stuff like Boomerang and MeTV that focuses entirely on retro entertainment. Of course, there's nothing wrong with using the internet either. If a person happens to enjoy X from decade Y, why wouldn't he use what modern technology allows us in discovering more of that period? Do you think that anyone listening to Bach is pining for the 18th century?

Agreed. I was born in 1980. Does that mean I shouldn't love Alien (1979) as much as I do?

"Problem?"

It's easy to love a previous generation when you didn't actually live through it.

I am sure many love the 50's and 60's etc, but if they were growing up there they may not have liked it if they had to come back in a time machine.

The problem was the claim you grew up in the wrong generation.

#lewronggeneration is pretty much a meme at this point. You can go to any Pink Floyd video on YouTube and find 12 year old kids lamenting the existence Justin Bieber, for one example. WelshBloke realized that I was using it jokingly, you haven't. The way I see it, anyone born today has access to entertainment from any preceding generations, provided someone put it online. fwiw I do enjoy stuff from my own generation as well (lots of Nickelodeon/Cartoon Network growing up, plus 90s computer games), with how easy it is to find things online today, I see no reason for a person to peg themselves into a given generation unless they want to.

I think the difference is growing up in the 80s was pre internet. Its hard to explain the difference but if you were in the 80s you were in the 80s. Now you can listen to whatever you want whenever you want to and it makes everything less important. So youre in '14 but you can be in 1986 or 1964 and it loses a lot of what made people bond. I went to school and discussed the episode of "The young ones" that was on the telly the night before because literally everyone in the school would have watched it at the same time. Watching it 30 years later just doesn't have the same impact. Its just the difference between the on demand culture that we have now and the culture then which was to really cherish anything good that came along because you didnt have a lot of choice.
