Disrespect is disrespect, made in jest or in earnest. I'm not Indian and I find this distasteful. This is a person who embodied some of the best characteristics of humanity. Maxim is within their rights to print this article, hurrah for freedom, but we're free to comment on whether or not it is good taste.
Complaining about finding mean, tasteless, sexist, evil, grotesque, offensive material in Maxim is like complaining about finding wheels on cars.

For the love of GOD!!! MAXIM isn't a serious publication!!! It is 99% Satire 1% hot pics. If anyone takes MAXIM seriously they had issues before ever looking at the mag.

I am not Indian, and I find it distasteful too.

The article is distasteful and we Americans of Indian origin/Indians in America/brown race general have taken our concern to Maxim.
Although we do not form a big customer base for that publication, we are the richest and most educated ethnic minortiy here in US, and with our money/position and a united voice, we will speak and show our influence ..slow and steady. Jeesh the average family income of an Indian origin family in US is $74,000 .. that is 2 times more than US per capita and 3 times more than average white household. Not to be taken for granted.
I was just wondering what would have happened if they had shown a white boy kicking Martin Luther King or a Hispanic icon.
The law suits are coming .. Maxim will pay.. no doubt.. but it will be slow and your help is needed.
We are activley taking this matter to GOI and our consulate in NYC .. and last I heard Maxim was trying to get a base in India and Asia with a new magazine for that market. Let us see how they do that .. and god save their rep in India .. he will be mauled irony Gandhi style.
I urge all people who identify themselves with Mahatma Gandhi or Bapu, the Father of our nation to call/fax and complain here :

I do not see any problems with a white guy beating another white dude.
Also Gandhi is not another bald white guy, understand ? To you maybe he is, but to us, he is similar to your founding fathers. He is much more .. and he is called the "father of the nation".
How will you feel if Washington or Jefferson or Henry was shown like that ?
Also how can you equate G W bush with Gandhi ? Your argument will hold true if they showed our Prime Minsiter Vajpayee being kicked and thrown. No its was our Gandhi being shown ..and we will be offeneded.
Gandhi is an icon and a symbol of respect to a billion.
Answer my question also : What if we replace that Gandhi pic with that of an African american or Latino ? MLK jr ? Maybe some afro american leader who made a diference ? Why not a slave's picture in ragged clothes ?
I would say Maxim will be pretty much scared to print their next issue. All their editors would be taking a long vacation in the mid west I am sure.
In any case, we will get Maxim to apologise and take it down. The ethnic Indian community in NYC/NJ/CT/PA is very pro active in these issues and so is our lobby in washington.
If Maxim can show distasteful articles on Mahatma gandhi, we can also show our protest and influence against them.
And we have been succeeful 99% of the time .. the last time with MCDonalds who had to admit they put beef fat on french fries labelled as vege and they paid a healthy sum to Hindus/vegetrians who were cheated.
