That's pretty cool, but he says the project starts to tumble at 3 meters, which is not a long distance.

Sounds like the bore needs work, machining like rifling perhaps?

That looks awesome!

Sadly, it's launch capability leaves a little to be desired. But, I can't imagine such a gun with a long-range lethal projectile can even be held by an individual at this point.

I can't wait for the US Navy to finish up the R&D on their rail-guns. They have a stated goal of Mach 7, or at the minimum, Mach 3 iirc. And the projectiles in mind are massive blocks of destruction.
Can only imagine the devastation such a large projectile moving at Mach 7 could cause to anything (and the surrounding area) that is in the cross-hairs!

Does something like that actually shoot a physical projectile or does it just shoot out a force of air or something? Don't know too much about these.

It shoots a slug just like a firearm.

Instead of releasing gas through rapidly burning propellant a strong magnetic field provides propulsion.

These are not scalar weapons!

If you watch the video clip, you'll see him pull the projectile out of the objects he is shooting. It is not your traditional bullet, it is quite long compared to a bullet fired from a regular gun.

So, it's a fairly crude build, with lots of salvaged parts... I can't see room to complain about the results given what it is.

Complainers get to try it out first hand...

First put left hand over business end, second use right hand to pull trigger.

Waiting to hear the bell like the ones at the Esso filling stations when the cars rolled over the hoses and all those gentlemen strolled out like sailors to check the tires, oil, and pump gas...

Found it! (the ding!)

Most definitely.

But I'm also curious if anything of that size can even launch a projectile at speeds comparable to a rifle... that's got to require a ton of engineering, and more importantly, a lot of electricity to make it all happen.

Since this kind of science goes way over my head, I can't make a safe bet... but I am betting such a device to launch a projectile at lethal speeds (and long-range) will be quite a bit larger and heavier... likely not even close to being portable for one-man operation.

It's most certainly possible, but yeah, it would require much more energy than is currently portable.

I'm pretty darn impressed! He needs to add a "magazine" of capacitors, too.. lol. Mo powa!

IIRC BAE is working on the navy's railgun project and has a 32MJ rail gun (that's megajoules, 10^ J, or 1000x what this guy's coil gun is doing). i believe their next target is 64 MJ.

Oh certainly. I'm not questioning the capability to do so, I'm questioning the ability to do so and be able to do so from your shoulder and carry it around with you.

It's a lot of energy and I'm not aware of anyone coming up with an energy solution ideal enough for such a task.

But, without such limitations, it appears easy if you have the parts.

I was a little off in regards to the Navy and rail-guns. They have already demonstrated rail-gun systems with projectile velocities over Mach 7 (specifically, 2520m/s), and have stated the system is designed with a goal of nearly Mach 17 (5600m/s - that's nearly 12,000mph, btw).

They stated at that speed, it'd be accurate enough to hit a 5-meter target (let's say, a tank) from over 200 nautical miles away, while firing 10 rounds/min. That's awesomely awesome.

Granted, rail-guns are very different from coil-guns.

I just love impressive displays of awesome destruction capability.

Our sci-fi world of the past few decades is sooo close, I can almost smell the burning flesh from laser guns. At the least, I want kinetic rifles (or hand-cannons).

To be fair, BAE's system is probably larger than most homes. :D

While pretty cool, my one beef is his safety measures. he's not even wearing protective goggles! bad!

Doesn't seem to have enough power.

It has plenty of power - it's portable, won't set off any security systems (no explosives) and can destroy a server. ;)

Weak. Sorry, Ruby.

It's like a nerf gun on roids.

I've been shot with one of those nerf guns. Would you want to get shot with that?

Yeah he was shooting at a toaster oven and his weapon has a laser sight. It could have bounced back in his eye. ;)
