<< 100Hp from a 600cc engine, or even 150Hp from a 1000cc engine >>

:Q how much does a bike like this weigh? the hp to weight ratio must be down in the single digits...easily...

<<

The catahram superlight ( you know what I am talking about - that lotus super 7 clone kit car) has a power to weight ratio of 500:1. The Suzuki GSXR-750 has it like 700:1 I dont know what the Yamaha R1 (150HP from 1000cc) has .. but its definately greater than any other car.

My bike weighs in at 381pounds dry, about 410 fullly laden with fuel. For that I can do 0-60 in about 5 seconds, faster if needed.

Wah! Just got done working on the pig. It's just your average 460 cubic inch V8. It's only about 250HP stock, so no big deal there. It gets 10MPG and each gallon is 6.1 pounds. But anyway, I just put a new Modine radiator in it for $150.00. I was happy about that. Changed the oil and filter for the first time after 15 months and 7,000 miles.

In the process of cleaning leaves from under the wiper arms, I left one snagged on it's rest. When I turned them on, the driver's side wiper arm tore it's mounting apart. CRAP! How much is that gonna cost me? Probably more than the car is worth... about $20.00 from the bone yard, I bet :disgust:

oh man...if I had the money, time and space, the caterham would be sitting in my garage...actually, who am I kidding. I'd do it even if I only had the money 🙂

How much are those kit cars?

<<

<< fyi, 1L = 6 hamsters (or thereabouts) >>

hahaha

so my car must have a 10.8 hamster engine (1.8L.. 127hp)
not much, but i've gotten it up to 115mph before.
>>

ditto. 10.8 hamsters, 115 mph.

<< well, it depends...if you want the basic 4 cyl live rear axel, then it starts at about $6-7K, and it only gets more expensive from there...

Thanks for the link, I've always been interested in building my own car.

Dang those things are expensive. I don't know where you got the $7000 figure from, but when I check the website I'm seeing more like $30-$40k. If they are too much that's too bad 'cuz it will put it out of my price range, but I could see dropping $10k into one (maybe).

the $6K figure is what I was quoted by a Caterham dealer a few years ago when I *almost* bought the kit car.

one of these days...🙂

Are you in the UK? 'cuz I check caterhamusa.com & it was listing more like $30k

no, I'm in the US. I'm not sure how accurate the $6K number is today, but like I said, that is what I was quoted for the most basic of kits many years ago. may have been a special price, may not, but I think I should have taken the chance when I had because like you, the only prices I could find on the caterham site were pretty high. (however, I could not find a price for the kit-maybe it'll be a nice surprise?)

hmmm, interesting. the Classic Live Axel kit I was looking at included all parts needed to get the car running. it came semi-assembled (all wiring and tubing was done at the factory) but everything else including the engine and tranny had to be done by the customer. however, the kit on the caterhamusa.com site comes fully assembled less engine and tranny-not much of a kit IMO...no wonder it cost $30K.

Ok, I could see assembly raising the price that much, but doesn't that take away all the fun? Kinda like buying a comptuer from Alienware 😉

I want a mini but i've only ever seen one here in the states, and that's about 1/4 down the road from me. Lucky british bastards still get new ones.

I 2nd that

<<

<< only about 46 mpg with hard thrashing >>

:Q
you say ONLY like its not that much!! my car only gets about 30mpg
>>

Well cirtainly here in the UK, a litre of fuel is 70 pence (£0.7). That makes it $1.01 per litre according to XE.com.
Fuel economy is a very big deal when it costs as much as it does here. Deisels which get 55mpg + are becoming very popular...

My car = 1396cc Civic (rare car in the UK would you believe! 😉)

<< what size engines are in your cars? My car's an Austin Mini 1000 modified to put out just under 50bhp(!). but it's not as slow as you may think...the car only weighs 1400lbs so it'll get up over 90mph on a good day (and a downhill).

besides, it's nothing compared to the Mini 850 (847cc) that I used to have. what a dog! with more than just the driver in the car forget about anything even resembling highway speeds!

How fast does it rev? A lawn mower has about 350cc displacement (for metric newbies: 1000cc=1liter)
