This is just insane...

thats why i say its their benching cpu, a few frames here and there but nothing noticeable in gameplay. and when you can get a 3700+ sandy and clock the hell out of it for 1/3 the $$, whats the point?

Its funny how almost half of the posts after page 1 have so little to do with the actual question. He wants to know how to spend 3.2k on a pc.

It sounds like you have the basics figured out.

Personally I would say go with a x2 4X00 (whatever fits the budget) I'm runing the 4400 and I love it.
Two 74 WD raptors stripped for performance. Although having extra cash going SCSI here wouldn't be a bad idea.
A 250 or 300 gb "storage" drive
Throw in the p180 case because I love this case
2gb of great memory (if your thinking of OC'ing this is going to matter a good deal) and I would personally go higher than pc3200 but depends on your OC needs.
Hands down it seems the 7800gtx is the way to go for video.
Power supply Antec
Motherboard really any NF4 board would go fine, I like my MSI K8N platinum/SLI
Zalman CPU cooler
DVDRW
DVDROM
Floppy (if you use those)
More fans (the P180 comes with most of them but there are a few spots left empty and I found that the case really cooled down adding them)
X-FI

OR....just buy an alienware ALX and get the whole thing done for you and watercooled at that. I'm all about building myself but its such an awesome setup.

thats why these always veer off topic. chit , anyone can configure a decent system for $3200 so everything is "imo"

My suggestion:

X2 4400+ 550.oo
2 gigs high Ocing ram: 350.oo
eVGA 7800GTX 490/1300
DFI Lanparty SLI-DR 170.oo
WD Raptors striped 2+x 74gb or the higher end SCSI (Raptor beats many SCSI) 360.oo
SB XFi 130-280.00
2005FPW 500.oo
Logitech Z-5500 200.oo
Antec P180
OCZ Powerstream 520w

this is what im almost gunning for as well but a tad different:

DFI mobo
only ONE eVGA 7800GTX
dell 2405 lcd monitor or 2 dell 2005 FPW
one small raptor for gaming, windows, apps etc
400-500 gig HDD storage as second.

Ok kids... this is it:

ASUS A8N-SLI Premium
7800GTX (he'll add another in a short matter of time)
Two Seagate Barracuda 250gb HDDs
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+
2x1GB Corsair VS at 3
Thermaltake Silent Power 480
Thermaltake Tsunami Dream (silver)
Dell 2405FPW

Around $2,915.81 shipped... Boy, do I love sales.

they do make a wired mx-1000 its called logitech G5. the mx-518 compares also.

Huh? Where is the logic behind that for gaming?

I'd be inclined to agree if I was comparing modern day LCD's to CRT Tubes 10+ years old, but I have seen nothing that can match NEC's latest line of CRT Tubes. (And I've seen my fair share, believe me)

As for a PC, the performance difference between $3000 and $2000 isn't exactly huge. A budget like that has one of the worst performance to cost ratios around.

Definitely get a Dell 2405 cause that is going to last a lot longer than the computer will last. Don't spend too much on the CPU, it will lose value very quickly.

I'd buy a $1500 computer, a $500 monitor, and spend the rest on whiskey and hookers.

I build $750 computers, $250 monitors, and PROFIT! 😀

I wouldn't put that PSU in a $600 computer let alone a $3,000 one. You must get a PSU from Seasonic, PCP&C, Fortron, Enermax, or Antec. This is a show-stopper.

I've had that specific PSU in a FX53 box for over a year now, easily, and had no problems with it. I actually use the 680W version in a secondary SLi box, and again, no problems. Is there a particular reason you have problems with it? (note that your other suggestions are perfectly acceptable. I'm just looking for your reasoning for your comment).

Any decent motherboard with 64-bit PCI-X slots.
Five 147Gb Seagate Cheetah 15krpm SCSI drives in whichever RAID format you choose.
LSI MegaRAID 320-1 should suffice.
Two 2001/2005FPWs.
X-Fi.

Dont get those monitors, they have ghosting/blurring problems. Heck i have one of the fastest panels around (VX924) and i still notice motion blur. I pay great attention to details, and the dell monitors are flat out unacceptable for me. I would recommend a viewsonic vp191b or the vx924, they are both fast and suitable for games.

gross. i don't even wanna touch this. just buy an alienware. with over $3k... trying to find good value becomes a moot point. gross.
