Here is my suggestion using Newegg:

Newegg doesn't have the X-Fi cards yet, so you'd have to pick one up at Best Buy.

I'm not entirely sure it's the best choice for this type of rig, since 1280x1024 res is kind of wasted on a dual GTXs, but that monitor is great for gaming. It's the only one which can do 60fps without any ghosting, as it has under 16ms latency (real latency, not marketing bs).

Fixed.

No it isn't. I don't like the third w. Wiener just isn't for me.

Interesting that you would immediately think of weiner. :Q

However, it stands for Women. Plural. 😀

I'd probably do

$1500 for just the computer
$800 on a display
$900 on sound

(or is 3.2 the budget without sound/display?)

I would suggest soemthing like this also. Probably around 2k on the computer and then spend the rest on things that last.

agreed

when the computer cant play games any more.....it'll still be able to liquify the foundations with wicked sound

May I ask what?

So you're thinking 2405 for the display then? Sounds like a good choice from what I've read.

He's got 6.1, dunno what brand but he's happy with it and it puts out. But yea. the 2405FPW is amazing... I'm gonna pick one up too.

For the 7800GTX... 480w PSU would do with a minimum Athlon64 X2 4200+, right, or should I just go up to 550w?

If you look in my sig, you can see what's pushing my 500W, and I have no problems at all, so a decent 480W will be sufficient.

Really depends on the brand.

If I had a huge budget I'd get one of the higher end Seasonic S12 series PSUs.

I have the 430 right now and I'm happy with it.

Five 147Gb Seagate Cheetah 15krpm SCSI drives in whichever RAID format you choose.
LSI MegaRAID 320-1 should suffice.
Two 2001/2005FPWs.
X-Fi.

How, with a 3200 dollar budget, is he going to be able to afford five hard drives that cost 1200 dollars each?

And the one in my sig is an Antec. 😛 Hence my reference to it. It's been a solid performer since the day I got it, and I have no qualms recommending it to anyone.

Yea' I've used Antecs in all my builds (about 20?) and they've all been really solid and great, inexpensive, too.

I've got the TrueBlue 480 and love it.

$3200 on a friggin' PC?? First tell your friend to get a life/out-of-the-house and then why don't you tell him to spend $6 or $700 on the machine and save the rest for backpacking through Europe or SE Asia next summer? - honestly folks, if in 20 years all you have to tell your kids about are vintage hardware, LAN parties, weapons-mods, high-scores, version-patches, etc, etc you're gonna be feelin' like a real chumps.

He has donated, he has travelled, and it just so happens it's his money and he can do whatever he wants to do with it since he worked for it, man... how much have you donated to natural disasters, or better yet, how much have you even given back to your community?

Man... it's just a computer, dude. Settle down, just because you don't have the means to be able to put 3.2k into a computer doesn't mean you should go off on somebody you know absolutely nothing about.

Anyway...
