This is just insane...

A friend of mine has said amount of money to spend solely on a computer... I'm quoting here, "Go balls out on this thing," so what kind of damage can we do with 3.2K?

He's gonna be gaming... a lot. I'm putting together my own little layouts for this job, but I'd wanna hear what some of the more crazy people here would do with this sort of funding.

Lemme know, guys! Thanks.

Ian

PS - He hates Intel, doesn't plan to overclock at all, and the budget needs to include monitor only. So just the rig and a display.

FX-57.
2Gb decent RAM.
2x 7800 GTX (SLI)
Any decent motherboard with 64-bit PCI-X slots.
Five 147Gb Seagate Cheetah 15krpm SCSI drives in whichever RAID format you choose.
LSI MegaRAID 320-1 should suffice.
Two 2001/2005FPWs.
X-Fi.

/thread.

I'd probably do

$1500 for just the computer
$800 on a display
$900 on sound

(or is 3.2 the budget without sound/display?)

X2 4800! 😀😀😀😀😀
2 GB OCZ Platinum 2-3-2-5 ram
DFI SLI-DR
7800gtx in SLI...
SATA 3.0GB 250 (X2 maybe) hard drives.
Seasonic S12 600w
Antec P180
Creative X-Fi Fatality.

i never really understand why people do that as you can put together a system that comes within 10% of performance of the $3200 system for $2000 with the display

then in a year or so you can take the money you saved and build a completely new rig

with that said

DUAL 2405s from dell, leaving 1600 to spend on PC

FX57, 2gigs of premium ram, premium mobo (DFI, Asus?), SLI 7800GTX golden sample, X-FI & good speakers or headset, quality monitor, spiffy case (antec 180?), maybe watercooling?, Logitech or Razer mouse, logi or ms keyboard, func "mousing surface",

If I had the money, it would be Athlon64 X2 and 7800GTX in SLi. I would go for at least 2GB of RAM, but if you have the money in the budget after adding everything else, throw it up to 4GB.

hmm...
Dell 24" $900
7800GTX $500
X2 4400 $600
2x1GB ram $200
nF4 mobo $150
Case $150
PSU $100
HDD: $150
DVDRW: $50
Sound card: $150
Speakers: $300

wow I just realized computers can still be so expensive today...

I would suggest soemthing like this also. Probably around 2k on the computer and then spend the rest on things that last.

Based on the assumption that this will primarily be a gaming system:

FX57 - $1011
2x1GB OCZ VX Gold PC4000 - $394
2x7800GTX - $850ish
DFI SLi - $150 OR MSI Neo4 SLi - $90
2x74GB Raptors - $288
1xWD 300GB SATA - $137
Antec 500W SmartPower - $80
X-Fi - $200
Case - $150

Sadly, $3200 doesn't go far enough if you want the latest and greatest.

dual 7800GTX, everything else is expendable. i suggest a high end trinitron/diamondtron CRT, don't put those nice cards on an lcd 🙁

He needs an LCD for he has absolutely no desk space for even a 17" CRT...

Currently, he's set on a Dell 2405FPW for $1k, and then 2.2 for the rig...

unless they made a wired mx1000 or revised the wireless model to not crap out as soon as the mouse is lifted from the surface, then stick with mx518.

He only needs display and the rig, no sound, no mouse/keyboard... he's got all that as it is!

You make assumptions. There's nothing stating he needs a monitor. That, and $2400 (and a kick ass sound system...wtf, that's not going to increase gaming performance, or even affect it...use your heads, please) doesn't really go a long way anymore.

Apple cinema display - $2,699.99 i believe
7800GTX + free mobo

wow, when you come to look at it, $3,200 isn't that much. I can't even get a CPU out of that with the apple cinema display
