This is how I get 32 city and almost 40 highway: I drive my civic normally, sometimes enjoying all 1.7 liters and a little too much. I usually shift from first to 2nd at 4k and the rest at 3k.

Sorry that I got on peoples nerves here. Everyone here is to smart.

Oh my God, someone did ask that. That's why the EPA answered it.

If you have a manual transmission, the lower the shift speed, the better the fuel economy. Your owners manaul will give you more information.

Quick miri, to the owners manual! /batman

Another thing is that the Scion TC power band is spread evenly thanks to more torque, unlike the Civic which requires higher RPMS to gain power. Shifting at 2800rpm is like shifting at 4000 on a Civic.

You would be surprise at the number of people that shift at 4000-5000rpm and cruise at over 3000 and wonder why they get bad gas mileage.

Seriously, everyone thinks they're in racecars, though sometimes i do go up to around 4k, i rarely go over 3k, for shifting or for cruising. I don't need the power, it really wouldn't save me any time to accelerate that fast, if i need to jump out in traffic sure, but otherwise it's pointless. I also exeed EPA by 2mpg :D

Just because I shift at 2800rpm I drive slow? That is funny. I Can get up to 45mph doing that in like 7 seconds.

Why do you think im driving slow? My car is rather quick, It gets up to 2800RPM extremely fast which means im at 45mph in no time. The highest speed limit on my commute is 45mph.

i hope you don't drive 45 mph in a 45 zone!

You got a problem with driving the speed limit? And yes, I let cars pass me.

Yeah, you're that a$$hole I'm always cursing at.

And you're the asshole I'm always cursing at.

That's only because your car is like a street legal F1 car. Most cars aren't that fast.

That is not always true. Not at all. Most car engines operate poorly and inefficiently while bogging.

The reason you're having success with your tC is because it has a torquey engine with a low geared transmission. Ideally, Toyota should have just put taller diff gears in the car in the first place, and then you wouldn't have to drive like you do to get better mileage, but the low gears help you bog it around town and save gas. This doesn't work in all cars and, quite honestly, it's not so important to me to pinch a couple pennies on gas that I would sacrifice any and all enjoyment I would get out of driving my car.

Scions ARE little rinky dink econobox's. Cute yes, but thats what they are.
If your REALLY concerned about milage, get a car that gets good milage. Dont buy a wanna be gas mizer then drive it conservatively to try to get better milage. I mean hell, you could drive a Corvette and get around that milage.

And your car is rated 22/29 by the EPA. The length of your commute does not determine city or highway mileage, but the conditions and how often you have to start and stop. 27mpg then would be normal in your car for mixed driving conditions, which is what it sounds like your commute really is.

/end lame thread

Shifting around 3000 in a tC is adequate to keep pace with traffic. You've obviously never driven one. And driving conservatively in any car help you conserve gas. You think you'd get the same mileage in a Corvette shifting at 5k?

In short, you're a fvcktard. Please drive your Jetta into the nearest brick wall. Or at least try to be funny while trolling, like Nebor.

I get 1 mpg over the EPA highway rating of 18 mpg in my 93 Dakota 4x4 and I drive it hard. Keeping it in tip-top mechanical condition is what did it for me. Also, after 183,000 miles, eveything is pretty well broken in!

Layoff this guy.
I 'don't' think this is common knowledge to a lot of people. Keep your RPM's as low as you can (without going slow if you can help it) and you'll get better mpg's. I'm teaching my wife how to drive stick, and when I tell her it's OK to go 2nd right to 5th for example, she looks at me like I'm nuts. I can vary the mpg's in my Probe GT by quite a bit just by how I drive. If everyone in this thread already knows that, fine. But I'm tellin you all that a lot of people DON'T know that....just look around next time you go for a drive and look at all the stupid faces staring back at you...then tell me I'm wrong.. :)

Oh and who's the idiot who's whining about the guy driving A CAR and being 10 miles from work? Troll I hope? I live 5 miles from work and I, of course, drive, as does everyone else.
