This is how I get 27 mpg+ on a car rated at 22 mpg

I bought my car last summer, a 2005 Scion TC. Car is rated at 22 city 28 highway. If I could buy a different car now, I would have bought a Corolla, Civic HX or a Scion XA. But since my car is rated at a lousy 22mpg, I do my best to conserve gas. My commute is 10 miles over 30 minutes. I consider that city driving. First few tanks were really bad gas mileage, around 22-23. I now get over 27mpg. I think the best was 27.7

You might think that 5+ mpg over EPA rated is not very good but that is 23% better and since a lot of people get less than EPA mileage I think the numbers are pretty good.

Here is what I do.

Shift at around 2800rpm

Cruise at around 2000-2300rpm

In my car that means I am in 5th gear at 45mph

You can also not drive one day out of the week, that really helps my mpg alot.

You would be surprise at the number of people that shift at 4000-5000rpm and cruise at over 3000 and wonder why they get bad gas mileage.

Those are great tips Captain Obvious! Try increasing tire pressure to pinch even more pennies.

Why do you think im driving slow? My car is rather quick, It gets up to 2800RPM extremely fast which means im at 45mph in no time. The highest speed limit on my commute is 45mph.

Good tips. The AT in my car has me in the highest gear possible at all times when in the city. I am also in 5th at 45mph, maybe even less. The upside is that when I press on the gas, it drops really quickly so I can accelerate.

If you dont like the tips than why leave a negative comment? There are some people that wonder why they get crappy gas mileage, just giving some pointers.

I usually shift at 4000-6000 and cruise in 5th from 40-whatever and get ~32mpg.

Don't those Scions go from 0-45mph in like 1.2 seconds?

You got a problem with driving the speed limit? And yes, I let cars pass me.

Nope, I'm a fantastic driver. Never an accident, one ticket to my name when I was younger... about 6 years ago. If you're trying to say that you were in one that was your fault, then it sounds like your confidence is shot (worse possible thing for a driver).

I dated a girl once who, the day after she got her license, got pulled over for not coming to a complete stop at a stop sign. She was quite possibly the worst driver I've ever had the displeasure of driving with... There's being cautious, then there's being a hazard. She would come to a complete stop at all stop signs, wait 10 seconds then go. If another car got there after she was already stopped, she'd wait till they got pissed and went first. She'd drive 5 mph below any speed limit.

Why is everyone being so sarcastic?

Have you ever heard people asking, why is my car getting lower than EPA mileage for city driving?

Everyone here is to smart and would never ask that question
