Yes, which is saying something given the bitterness of the fight over the 2000 results.

Neither candidate is all that great (I'd have preferred Sanders), but Trump seems to be dragging everything down. He has all the maturity and political knowledge of a 13-year-old, and gives Clinton an easier time than she would have otherwise. About all she has to do is show that she's a functional human being who offers basic compassion to other people and accepts fundamentals like logic and science.

I have two questions. First, will the Republicans learn their lesson, or will their 2020 nominee once again be the one who shouts the loudest and stirs up the most irrational fears? And will the Democrats recognize that supporters want real change, not just a custodian who won't blow things up?

Republicans are toast after this election cycle, they need to move more centrist, pandering to old white values aren't going to cut it going forward.

Given that the GOP's reaction to Bush/Cheney's excellent adventures in starting wars they couldn't finish and crashing a moderately performing economy was to pull ever harder to the right, hunker down in absolute obstructionist mode, gerrymander to the very limit of the law and ethics and create their own laws to disenfranchise and suppress Dem leaning voters, I'd say the GOP is going to stand tall on their past behavior and double down on it despite how badly that attitude affected them because the base of loony goons they created won't allow for the party to deviate from this self-destructive path that they're on.

As for the Dems, it seems to me that "at this present point in time" what was owed is going to be paid back (and then some) by having Hillary get her two turns at the helm. Until the time comes when the Clinton Clan has sailed off into the sunset after having their just due, the "revolution" that Bernie Sanders started will resume and pick up speed, having being bolstered by the ruinous destiny the GOP has created for itself. Of course, Bernie won't be able to run due to his advanced age at that point, but the impression he left on the nation from the recent campaign he ran will be lasting and hopefully, it will bear fruit.

It's impossible to say. The Repub leadership is still trying to sense the wind, figure out what advances their trickle down agenda. It's all they really care about. The rest is insincerity.

And will the Democrats recognize that supporters want real change, not just a custodian who won't blow things up?

The attempt will obviously be made. Read the platform & Clinton's position papers. Much depends on the Repubs, obviously. Given the state of the HOR, she'll probably spend as much time defending progress as advancing it.

This election cycle's candidates have provided SNL with superior material to work with to make their skits most memorable.

What I can't get over is how long it's been. I don't recall the other ones being this long. They need to have a limit of like maybe 60 days at most, and also have a spending limit. Heck even our election was too long... and that was a year ago, and the US one was already started. We had time to elect a prime minister and he had time to serve 1 year and the US election is still not over!

On the other hand, this has been fairly entertaining to watch from up here. We'll need to figure out what else to watch once it's over. :p

Yes, absolutely draining. And I am not EVEN IN THE US ANYMORE. But of course I have a keen interest in this, used to live in the US, wife is American, relatives and friends in the US etc. Ironically also the election I basically followed from the start and in detail, unlike any other election before.

Again, totally missing the point....
What is WORSE is the extremist far right loonies that have taken over the republican party.
You can't blame an election. You must look under the hood and realize this is not the worse election, this is the worse of America that have broken thru into the main stream.
No, you cannot blame the process, the election, when one side has allowed themselves to be used, abused, and hijacked by extremist. The loonies. The worst of the worst.
On Wednesday, the only words of advise that we all must give republicans...
That is, if they ever hope to survive....

Once Democrats regain control of the legislative branch we need to start repealing the death penalty and eliminate it from our justice system. The extremism that you speak of should not be condoned by the church yet they seem to want the power to take peoples lives which Jesus spoke out against. The other thing that bothers me is the separation of church and state. I keep seeing churches as designated polling places yet no matter how well intentioned that might seem it violates that principle. No part of state should be at church and church has no business in state or business. Church needs to get out of health care and/or Congress needs to pass laws forcing them to provide the same services as a normal hospital would including abortions when the mothers life is endangered. Religions influence needs to be pared back to preaching the gospel period!

GOP.
Democratic primary was very civil. GOP primary was... well... we all saw what it was.

On the surface it was. All the back stabbing was behind closed doors. Bernie was a pin cushion.

Oh and let me add. It has been the biggest train wreck I have ever seen. On both sides.

I voted no only because in this election the Supreme Court hasn't decided who our next president is going to be.....yet.

In the courts current state that could be a tie. You should have voted yes.

At least in my lifetime this has been the worse. Discovery channel was showing "The Presidents" series marathon which went from Washington to Nixon. Some of those elections pre civil war were extremely uncivil. And some of those presidents were actually unsavory characters or were actually quite indifferent to running the country in general.

We will survive whatever happens.

Yes and by a VERY wide margin. Originally it was caribou barbie and McCain, but this one, holy shitballs. Fuckface Von Clownstick vs Hillary, a presidential candidate who is openly racist, belligerent, a bully, a coward, uses social media to exact his verbal vengeance... just fucking horrible. And my brother who is 15 years my senior also thinks it's the worst. The only one I can think of that may have gone as low as this was Adams v Jefferson, some serious mudslinging in that one.
