They wanted to make us wear a harness with just such a device when we crawling down 12 feet into a piece of machinery that had limited foot holds. We talked them out of it when we showed them just how little room we had to work with once we got to the bottom and the harness would have been in the way.

I thought so too, which made me wonder the location of this tower, anyone have any ideas?
 
you couldn't pay me enough to climb that thing once, let alone multiple times for a salaried job. anyhow, anybody able to find statistics on pay and death rate?

LOL Thats what I want to know how much a person gets paid to do that? Because an on the job accident has a high probablity of being fatal.
 
Is the tower rendered inert or still transmitting while he's there? Those must be some powerful EM waves.
 
The height would not bother me. What freaks me out is "What is holding the tower up???!!!!!" It seems like it would bend being that tall, and you know it's happened more than once. That thought is why I could never do that.

This. I have serious fear of heights. Won't even go out on porch of my brothers loft which is 12th story or fly if i can avoid it damn sure am not taking a job with them.

I DO NOT like heights...

I'm not even comfortable taking an elevator that high...🙄 Every few years, I have to go to a meeting in SF on the 22nd floor of a building...<shudder> I hate the ride up/down...and stay away from the windows while I'm up there.

Oddly enough, being in an airplane doesn't bother me, I've done about 40 parachute jumps...and that doesn't bother me, but things like this...I get just a bit...uneasy.

jumping out of a plane isn't all that bad when you know you've got a working chute. these guys are free climbing...

Although that was a little scary, if someone was going to pay me $100k to climb to the top of that I would do it.

But I would like to know how they get down. Hopefully parachute 😎
 
Damn, that's scary. You would think the wind would gust so much up there that it would toss them off.
 
assuming he is doing electrical work up there? since they pointed out the electrical bo x on the way up....i would expect electricians pay (50k national average last i looked) + bad mother fucker pay (another 50k a year) + shit your pants pay (extra 20k). So for 120k/yr guaranteed (no less than) I would do that.

plant it in the ground, and have an assload of supporting lines holding it in place. we have a few of those around here.

Yea, they have harnesses, and they can clip off to rest or work. I could do the ladder part, and climb fairly comfortably I think, but that last mast climb with the awkward pull up would have me frozen in place. I'd get to that point, and have to climb back down :^D
 
I sent out an email this weekend advertising a new video about tower climbing. It was a great video and I wish I could show it to you but the person I got it from expressed some concerns about how it reflected on the tower industry and ask me to take it down. So I did. But not to worry, we have agreed to work on more videos in the near future and I am sure they will be as good or better than the one I had to take down.

Sorry if you feel mislead or cheated but it was the only thing I could do.

I will let you all know when we have more videos on tower climbing, hopefully in the very near future. Thanks for tuning in. Russ
