Ignoring the psychological differences an eight foot wall is VERY different than your normal 5.5-6 foot wall. At eight feet you will need something to stand on to even reach the top. Furthermore, there is nothing for the person to grab on to. The concrete itself is very smooth (as opposed to brick and cinder block). The guy also mentioned adding a rounded top or glass. Both prevent someone from using that as leverage to lift themselves up.

It is not that it is impossible to get over but that it makes it far more trouble than it is worth. How many thieves carry around full ladders? Also keep in mind that they will need the ladder on the OTHER side as well. Which house is someone going to pick to rob, one that is a giant pita to even approach or the one you can walk right up to. It is merely another layer of security.

Yep. I'm six feet tall. With my arms extended, I wouldn't have to jump that far to reach the top. Its then just a matter of puling yourself up.
 
Having a wall like that is just inviting a zombie (or other, non-fictional) attack. Hiding in plain sight (blending in with the zombie crowd, a la "Shaun of the Dead", perhaps?) would be far cheaper and more effective.

We live in a very average middle class neighborhood. It certainly feels safe, but about a year back a woman was abducted from her driveway and raped. So we don't live with a "it can't happen here" mentality. And we don't live fearful either. When opportunities arise, like the necessary replacement of the termite eaten wood fence, we improve security.
