Sigh. I remember when this place was dying when I joined in 2004.
There is some truth to that. I think the best years, at least the ones I remember best were 2000-2004. The web was just not as big. If I have a problem now, I just look it up. Practically everything has been asked and you can find the answer through a quick search. There are not as many NEW unsolved questions that people need to ask about.

I've been reading anandtech since 99 and similarly the forums.

Go to Tom's and hit the "new posts" button. Hardware threads galore!

I personally hate the "downvote anything I disagree with" mentality of Reddit, since you just end up with a bunch of people together in a group that all think the same way.

That said, if I ask a question there I'll probably get a dozen answers to it within an hour. Here? Not so much anymore.
I think that's my biggest problem with Reddit. I feel like is a bunch of group-think and know-it-alls. Not EVERYONE is, of course, but that's what it comes off to me in general. Agreed with ya on the answer to question though, that is true.

This forum isn't dead! I mean, it does smell kind of funny, but I'm pretty sure I just saw it twitch.

I don't care much about tech anymore. I just apt update && apt upgrade, and everything works. Just the way I like it. My computer is a Dell refurb, which I swore I'd never do, but it Just Works™. Can't be arsed to overclock. Good enough is good enough. I'll sometimes hit up the tech forums to see what's going on, but most of time is here bullshitting.

People don't like forums as much anymore. They're dying all over; marketshare probably taken by facebook and reddit. Whatever. They'll die too one day. Nothing to get excited over.

More reason the'll merge with Toms.

Tom's does a lot more reviews, along with video clips and more buyer guides (which younger users today seem to prefer over actually reading). I'm the opposite as I would much rather read a focused article over someone like Buildzoid aimlessly droning on and on since he does his videos unscripted.

The reviews are a lot simpler, and not in depth like here, but they can churn them out much quicker than Anandtech can. Plus, when I search for something in Google tech related, Tom's usually pops up higher, so I imagine a lot of "newbies" would go with one of the first choices.

I really dislike video reviews/how-tos. I'd much rather read something with a few pictures.

No way - for instances like trying to wire things into your car, etc., you may have pictures of areas you can't even make out. Just watched a video on how to replace an in-dash screen last night. The video took 12 minutes to show everything, which means pictures alone would be beyond overwhelming. And this was only to decide whether I should go ahead with it.

Wait, what was that?!. Fuck! pause, back up, smear some more grease on the phone. Shit, it doesn't show that part very well. Wonder what I really have to do here??

One thing I like about video is it shows the force necessary to do some things. Of all things, I had to watch a video for changing a headlight in my truck. I took the obvious screws out, but it wasn't budging. Turns out it's friction fit in pretty tight, and I had to use a stick to pry the housing out of the body. The video helped by showing it didn't just drop away when it was unscrewed.

Here's the video (from a professional) I was referencing. Maybe about 1 minute was wasted, but the rest is everything someone has to consider and not easily done just by pics. Especially when all the connectors look similar and they're everywhere. Even with this video, I decided against it.

Having a thread titled "THIS FORUM IS DEAD" floating around on the first page or two in OT isn't exactly inviting. Noobs see that and back away. Doesn't anyone think about public image?

(sorry for the bump. I'll go back to following my advice and let this thread lay.)

who said anything about wanting noobs around here?

When did you change avatar?
For a second I thought Mosh was back!

[I still have no idea what even happened there...]

Don't we have all have a little Mosh inside of us?

Apparently she was banned during banapalooza AKA Modgate (September 2011) but we all know the real reason. She joined forces with Alky and CasioTech, they're on tour somewhere in Georgia last I heard.

Anandtech just doesn't have that niche forum appeal like it used to. Now that you can find a forum devoted to practically every topic in existence on Facebook or Reddit, a separate forum mostly devoted to hardware tinkering just isn't all that exciting to new users anymore.

Yea, times have changed like they always do. It's more livelier on those social media sites. FB, IG, YT, SC, Reddit.

It depends on what it is and how its done. Same with articles. There's good ones and bad ones.

STFU noob!

Did you kill her and cut her up and now trying to make people eat her remains? Or is she pegging you?

Yeah she got banned because the one person shared links to the mods secret forum and then were sharing people's "permanent records" via PM.

I thought they did a huge unban of everyone a couple of years later though, and she refused to come back because...whatever (or maybe she did and then left again after all the high school clique melodrama bullshit that happened when a bunch of the ones that had left came back and wanted to have little slapfights over who was actually super mean and/or ruined the forums, etc). Thankfully eits mostly went with her, although he made sure to stop in and make some ridiculously stupid lies (like claiming to be the Native American Slur's official chiropractor, wait I mean the Native American Slurs' Cheerleader's official chiropractor, because apparently he can't tell the difference between women cheerleaders and NFL players or "his fingers slipped" or whatever stupid bullshit reason he came up with to try and defend himself after making such a ridiculous claim) now and then.
