Plenty of very religious folks in churches who are progressive. Let's not go there though. Remember the jesus freaks in the late 70's?

I just can't deal with helping people over and over grow out of the stuff their parents taught them and show them they are OK people too.
Very hard on the soul to try to help deprogram people amd hel pthem realize that being a individual is OK, is all I was saying. And what comes out when people are upset is downright heartwrenching most of the time.
I had my own problems but my folks were very open minded and for that I am eternally grateful for this lets just say to have always been taught to find my own path.

ime, it's more often related ot the individual than the faimly or upbringing. I've known people who are completely screwed in the head who come from the nicest families you ever met. There are also those from totally disfunctional families that have their head on straight and tend to be some of the sharpest people I know. Upbringing certainly has an impact on people. But I question if what you're born with doesn't have more of an impact. It's hard to say which is the more important factor.

I dont mind which way the forum swings...all views are typically represented.
I tend to play devil's advocate, and i have noticed that i have started to side more left rather than right as before.
But overall my views on a particular subject havent changed much and i continue to give my input as i see fit.
I don't consider it as one side winning...i couldnt care less either way.

A lot of fake people jumped on the free love hippie bandwagon who shouldn't have ever been there. Oh well hopefully they had a good time before they became JC's men (and women) I would definatly take a pass on all the coke in the 80's they did though when they turned into the y word.

Uh, yeah it does indicate Republicans tend to make more money. What does that trend show if it DOESN'T show Republicans make more money on average? That I'd like to know...what trend does that statistic show?

I can't fault people for searching for some meaning in their life, even if they do it blindly. At least they're trying.

Most J freaks, thankfully, didn't stay that way. There are few things sadder than a 70 year old jesus freak/hippy. 🙂

I'm athiest/agnostic (I really don't know which right now), but I don't think Christianity has been harmful to our society. Most of the morals and values we have today come from Christianity. Christianity teaches good things, and there aren't many people blowing themselves up in the name of Jesus. Could you be specific and name what ills you think it's caused mankind?

Christianty had a very violent past where mass murder and even genocide took place. Also years of abuse and racism and corruption. But today, it has matured as a religion and corrected most of its wrongs. One of the greatest things in WW2 to happen was when priests took Jews in, risking their own lives in various countries of Europe. Also, remember that many christians were killed by Nazi's simply because they were christians. Islam, on the other hand needs to go through the maturing process.

At the moment, there is a struggle within Islam between those that claim to be believers and regular muslims. The fate of humanity rests on the outcome of it. There is no denying the fact that Islam will be the dominant religion of the future. Islam and non-Islamic people seem to be drifting away from each other, as hatred between the two groups seems to be escalating.

One can only guess that in the near future that will be a massive showdown between the muslim and non-muslim people of this world. I hope I'm wrong, but seeing as almost every major conflict is between muslims and non-muslims. One can conclude that for some reason the other religions cannot exist or exist as equals living side by side with radical Muslims.

First I just want to make it clear that I purposefully phrased my statement as "organized religion" because I wasn't singling out or picking on any one religion. There are many religions that are the culprits. The phrase "our society" was probably a bit wrong though because it implies today when I really was pointing not only to our society, but back throughout written history.

As far as Christianity, some specific ills it has foisted on mankind that I consider absolute crimes would be things like the destruction of the libarary at Alexandria, the Dark Ages in Europe - along with the brutal fuedal system, the restrictions on reading and writing, and the wars it fostered under the name of God - the Inquisition, and the systematic imperialistic rape of countries and cultures throughout the world during the time of expansionist Europe.

I've heard the argument that it wasn't Christianity respsonsible for those things. That it was groups or individuals that fomented those evils using Christianity as their cover. The claim is that "real" Christians wouldn't be that way or do that sort of thing.

I would agree as well. Supposedly "real" Christians wouldn't. But that doesn't go to the organization of Christianity; that statement goes to the ideals of Christianity and individuals that adhere to those ideals. Unfortunately people don't always stick to ideals and organized Christianity made those things I named possible and were often directly involved in the orchestration of those events right to the people and groups at the very top.

Today we have fundamentalist Islam wreaking havoc and being used as an excuse to murder and control people around the globe. That's what happens when religion and politics mix and thankfully the great men who founded this country were smart enough to know to keep them more or less separated. Religion has no place making determinations in government and that's the way it should be everywhere. That's where the evils from organized religion always seem to arise. If religious organizations want to exist to service their professed member's needs, great and fine. Don't expect me or any other non-professed members to act according to their edicts though and stay the hell out of governments because evil almost invariably arises from such an arrangement.

Sorry for the rather vicious rant, but that's one of the touchier subjects with me.
