first email

Thanks for the response, Computer Technician needed, kindly let me know if you can repair in Volume I will like to know if you an expert in Laptop Upgrades and the following upgrade's needed for 5 Dual core HP Laptops.

1 Format Hard Drive
2 Install Window 7
3 Install Microsoft Office Package
4 Norton Virus Software
5 Adobe Acrobat Reader
6 Diagnose Hardware. Hard drive, video card, processor.

If you can do what I have listed about then you got a job, I have all necessary software and license Key needed for the service installations and all the laptops are in good conditions except from the upgrades listed above. Let me know the charges for the 5 laptops and how soon can you get the work done on the laptops... Once I have the price the payment will be sent to you in advance meanwhile I will need your details for payment, such as;

Full Name :
Full Mailing address :
City :
State :
Zip code :
Phone Number :

The Payment will be sent to you once I have all these details. The payment mode will be a check. Let me know if you are okay with that... I will make proper arrangement on how the laptops will be delivered to you and also picked up once you are through upgrading them. Thou I have a reliable shipping company that will handle that anyway. I will be expecting your email.

I send a reply.

The follow up email

Thanks for the email. I got your details and in order to conclude our agreement for the repairs I'll have the payment put in the mail this week and I will get back to you with the tracking number for you to know when the check will arrive, the check I will be sending will include the excess payment which should be used in shipping back the laptops, I just want you to know this because I don't want to have any problem with you when you receive the check, which the payment will be more than your service charges. Once you have the payment, deduct your service charges and I will instruct you on how you will disburse the remaining to the shipping company....

I'll like you to re-confirm your information again cause I don't want any mistakes in your mailing address also the name that will be written on the check... Let me know if you are okay with the shipping and it might include going to wire money to the shipper. Just let me know if you are okay with my arrangement okay.

so someone sending me laptops and software licenses doesn't seem too shady (perhaps too trusting), but me possibly needing to wire money to a shipper definitely is.

so is this a craiglist scam or am I being paranoid? Seems pretty scammy to me.

Two craigslist rules:

1) Always make transactions in person
2) Always use cash

Of course it is. Even my mother, whom has never used craigslist, knows that.

Though go through with it and see if any packages with hardware arrive at your door. You'll probably just receive some boxes with bricks in them, or maybe rice or beans.
But hey ya never know, you might get firewood or something.

If any checks arrive you just need to go to your local check cashing service, usually found in poor inner city areas, and pay some guy like $20 to cash any checks you receive. You could even throw the person an extra $10 to pick up a fresh pack of cigarettes. If the fraudulent checks get cashed by one of those places, then you shouldn't feel bad ripping off an established community ripoff artist.

Good English mangled should be a clue for you. Sounds like someone that grew up in a British colony; one of the darker ones...

The fact that you need us to tell you it's a scam means you should probably not be on the internet.

OP....you really need someone to tell you it's a scam, that random person would ship X number of laptops to someone that person had never met, to do hd upgrades and simple software installs that could be accomplished by darned near any high school kid with a smattering of computer knowledge? Add to that, you'd even consider shipping laptops across the country when there have to be numerous options locally to do the job? (I've not been in any part of the country where there's not a bunch of local shops, kids, etc., quite willing to do that listed job.)

If he will send you all the equipment; then you let him know after the fact that the payment is no good. You are retaining the equipment until proper payment is made.

You really think somebody would send you five laptops without meeting you? That should be the point you stop reading the ad.

WTF is excess payment? That's like leftover crack. There is no such thing as leftover crack.
