The follow up email

Thanks for the email. I got your details and in order to conclude our agreement for the repairs I'll have the payment put in the mail this week and I will get back to you with the tracking number for you to know when the check will arrive, the check I will be sending will include the excess payment which should be used in shipping back the laptops, I just want you to know this because I don't want to have any problem with you when you receive the check, which the payment will be more than your service charges. Once you have the payment, deduct your service charges and I will instruct you on how you will disburse the remaining to the shipping company....

I'll like you to re-confirm your information again cause I don't want any mistakes in your mailing address also the name that will be written on the check... Let me know if you are okay with the shipping and it might include going to wire money to the shipper. Just let me know if you are okay with my arrangement okay.

so someone sending me laptops and software licenses doesn't seem too shady (perhaps too trusting), but me possibly needing to wire money to a shipper definitely is.

so is this a craiglist scam or am I being paranoid? Seems pretty scammy to me.

Of course it is. Even my mother, whom has never used craigslist, knows that.

Though go through with it and see if any packages with hardware arrive at your door. You'll probably just receive some boxes with bricks in them, or maybe rice or beans.
But hey ya never know, you might get firewood or something.

If any checks arrive you just need to go to your local check cashing service, usually found in poor inner city areas, and pay some guy like $20 to cash any checks you receive. You could even throw the person an extra $10 to pick up a fresh pack of cigarettes. If the fraudulent checks get cashed by one of those places, then you shouldn't feel bad ripping off an established community ripoff artist.

totally legit OP. proceed with complete confidence that the cheque you will receive in the mail is 100% transferable.

also, of course you will receive the cheque. no way in hell will not receive a cheque. for serious.

Good English mangled should be a clue for you. Sounds like someone that grew up in a British colony; one of the darker ones...

OP....you really need someone to tell you it's a scam, that random person would ship X number of laptops to someone that person had never met, to do hd upgrades and simple software installs that could be accomplished by darned near any high school kid with a smattering of computer knowledge? Add to that, you'd even consider shipping laptops across the country when there have to be numerous options locally to do the job? (I've not been in any part of the country where there's not a bunch of local shops, kids, etc., quite willing to do that listed job.)

Uhh. OP, I have this computer that I need you show me how to turn on. I swear, I cannot find the On switch. I will have my paycheck shipped to your house, and you just send me back the difference for payment in advance. Thank you.

If he will send you all the equipment; then you let him know after the fact that the payment is no good. You are retaining the equipment until proper payment is made.

You really think somebody would send you five laptops without meeting you? That should be the point you stop reading the ad.
