I'm need a notebook which I will travel with heavily. But I prefer a 14" or greater screen. What's the thinnest/lightest that you guys can recommend? Thanks!

Agreed on the T42-- It's a great travelling notebook.

I have the T42's predecessor, and I've gone everywhere with it, including a 4 month trip around the Western Pacific rim.

I'd get a powerbook 1.25ghz 15" .. it's about 5.5 lbs and if you wanted to try something new it would be a great platform to start with :)

T42's are the most well built in the class he's looking for and price most likely.

THe Marine Corp is retiring many of their "toughbooks" in favor of the T42's. Seems the grunts will treat the ToughBooks as durable because they are and that achieves a higher rate of failure in the field then the T42's that are deployed in padded bags. Ironic.

Cool story wacky dan.

When I was thinking of toughbook as fodder for a "Thinnest/Lightest" threade, I was thinking the thin toughbooks. Like The Y2:

"Thinnest and lightest we have seen" CNET

From notebook magazine "best laptops of the year"

Panasonic
Toughbook Y2With this improbably light, amazingly long-lasting semi-rugged notebook, Panasonic has done the impossible. Even though the Y2 boasts a 14-inch display, its magnesium alloy body tips the scales at just 3.4 pounds. Seriously, the first time we picked this laptop up, we wondered whether Panasonic left out the components

Oh wow, I didn't know the Y2 was generally available in the US, since dynamism.com sells it, but I guess it is.

I've seen those.... They are "toughbook like/lite" That's the way they get them thin. :) I like their implementation on some models with the optical drive having that top access door. Probably helps them get thinner and keeps crap out of the drive.

If you want something more cost effective than a T42, check out a dv1000 from HP. 14.1" widescreen with 6+ hours of battery life on the 12-cell. Very portable also.
If cost is no issue, T42 or look at the many sexy Asus laptops.

Sony Vaio FS series? checked one out at Frys. Very nice.

15" wide-screen and thin. Anyone have one that would like to chime in?

Absolute price-wise the T42 and T41 have come down. Dollar value wise they are still a premium, but that gap has shrunk with the coming of the T43.

The T42 is thin and lightweight (under 5lb if you go with the 6-cell battery I believe). Even with the 9-cell my T42 doesn't feel heavy at all.

I'm curious how durable this is, carrying the Toughbook name and all.
