Nice hack, works perfectly with my Thinkpad. Even easier to do in linux since I didnt even need a boot disk ;)

Any update on the LED problem?

I just upgraded my R40 with a Pro2200 and the following:
1. no-1802 hack
2. Intel Pro 2200BG adapter driver (8.1.0.28 )
3. IBM AccessConnections (3.70)
4. IBM Hotkey (1.11.0402)

Installs 2,3,4 were required according to the IBM website.

NO LED (but it works nicely)

BTW, when I hit Fn+f5 I get an error "IBM Wireless adapters (802.11 or Bluetooth) are not installed on this system" ... but then it invokes the Location Profile (black) access dialog - no problem. Is this normal?

I assume you used the IBM 2200BG driver and not the Intel-provided one. The latter brings its own functions to control WLAN connections. This means you have the choice of either Windows' own WLAN control applet, Intel's utility or IBM's Access Connections. Among these, I prefer Access Connections.

Access Connections has the IBM PCI IDs hardwired in one executable and one DLL (search this thread to find out which) and thus must be patched with the Intel IDs in order to recognize your NIC. If you read the comments from PoorHamlet above, you may get by with just disabling the Intel Sebring API.

I think that the unpatched AC is the reason why you got that error. In older versions, you could not control the WLAN card at all with AC unpatched, but maybe the error you experienced is only triggered if neither a WLAN card nor the IBM bluetooth adapter is present, which may not have been the case for anybody else. So, I guess your R40 did not come with bluetooth, right?

Thanks for pointing out the existense of the no-1802.com patch.

I only have one concern before I go get a cheap 2200BG adapter:

IBM's website says that R40s delivered with 11b is upgradable with the IBM version of the 2200BG. Mine was fitted with an 11a/b adapter which apparently is not to be upgraded even with the IBM 2200BG.

Are there differences in the internal aerials that could cause damage to either the pc or (less importantly) the adapter should I choose to install one anyway?

Thanks!

/Klaus.

@meyergru:

Yes, I was working with the IBM drivers and not the Intel-provided one. And you are correct to deduce, I don't have built-in bluetooth.

I'm confused: is your advice supposed to address the LED not working? I'm guessing the LED is a lost cause and you're trying to understand the "wireless not installed" error - ? Well, that's not a big deal since it gives me a "don't show me this message again" option.

So here's where I'm at now: I've uninstalled the Sebring API. I'm working with the Intel-provided drivers. I've patched qcon.dll and tpfnf5c.exe. Now I get a different error when I hit Fn+f5 ... "Unable to change the power state of wireless radio. Update the driver for the wireless adapter." AHHHHHhhhh!

Anyway, I didn't think to try the Intel-provided driver and apps but now I'm happy to discover that the ProSet/Wireless tool gives me Cisco LEAP capability so I can connect at the office. So thanks for that. But PLEASE let me know if and when the LED problem is solved.

@klaus32:

Where does the IBM website say that R40's delivered with 11b is upgradable with the IBM version of the 2200BG ??? I thought all R40's had tamper-proof miniPCI's (which is why you need the no-1802 hack and a T-7 hollow Torx screwdriver to open the bay door).

As far as your worry about damaging anything - forget it. You've got a standard miniPCI slot, a standard internal antenna and the different OEM variety cards are different only in ID's. My R40 took the Intel OEM card no problem and the true IBM version would've cost 5 times the $ and, not only that, it wasn't in stock. The ONLY thing the IBM version MAY do for you is allow the activity LED to continue to function (but I can't guarantee that whatsoever).

@dcaputi:

Thank you for replying. I didn't really think there would be any risk of damaging the system but better safe than sorry. Thinkpads - even older varieties - aren't exactly cheap.

IBM's product description at http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-54903 says:

NOTE(S):

1. Customers who purchase select IBM ThinkPad T40, R40, and X31 models with integrated 802.11b wireless Mini PCI adapters and UltraConnect antenna may upgrade their systems to 802.11g functionality with the new Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG Mini-PCI Adapter from IBM (Marketing part number (P/N) 73P2801).
2. ThinkPad models with integrated 802.11a/b functionality may not be upgraded with the Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG Mini-PCI Adapter from IBM (Marketing part number (P/N) 73P2801).

Now that I've read it again, I'm not entirely sure that note #2 applies to R40s. Maybe they are referring to non-Centrino systems?

Regardless of the a/b discussion, I think their point is that customers wanting to upgrade should send their ThinkPad to an authorized dealer for the upgrade. That would explain the Torx screw.

Klaus,

I saw that too after I responded last night. The key words there are "select models" and "UltraConnect".

No, IBM will NOT upgrade any ThinkPad because they do not have the FCC approvals to do so. Apparently the UltraConnect option comes with a more "open" FCC license agreement than the one we paid for. This is why you're on your own ... well, not exactly ;-)

Update:

The "No Wireless" error went away after I re-installed the IBM driver and Access Connects. So I guess the fn+f5 problem did have something to do with uninstalling the Sebring API and then re-installing the IBM software. Also, like magic, I now have a Cisco LEAP option in the Access Connect profile setup.

Still no LED !!! Whazup widat?

The short answer is: You won't get the LED running.

The long answer is given by reading this thread. Apart from the insights given by pcbcc, there are no indications how this could even be feasible. It seems like the control of the mini PCI LED control pins is different for at least some OEM versions of the Intel card (IBM at least, this we know for sure). The internal setup of the 2200 BG driver is controlled by the PCI IDs, so there may be some way to do it, but not even pcbcc has had success with that, and he was at the very bleeding edge...

Now, with the IBM/Atheros 802.11a/b/g cards available for a much more convenient price, the 2200 BG is not an attractive option any more, so I doubt that there will be put much further effort into that matter.

So, you are stuck with three options:

1. Live with the restriction
2. Buy a better card if you have the money
3. Try to fix the driver if you have the time

4. Enjoy the fact that the annoying flickering at the bottom of the screen is gone.

- or at least reduced to one LED (the harddisk activity) instead of two.

Okay, it would be nice to have an indication whether the radio is on or off. But other than that I just find the LED annoying.

That's exactly the answer I expected. I was hoping pcbcc was monitoring this thread and may have had some break-through since January.

So, bottom line, had I paid the extra $35 and got the IBM part, I would have a working LED... oh well, I can live with that.

Thank you meyergru, for all your feedback :)

I have an IBM R32 and purchased the Atheros wireless card. I tried the no-1802.com fix but I'm still getting the "unathorized card" message at bootup. I'm running windows xp pro so I used the Win98 cd to get to a command prompt and ran the no-1802.com program, but it's seems not to work. Am I doing something wrong? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

1. This is no chat. Don't expect quick answers.
2. Read. After you are finished: read again. See my post from 09/05/2004. The link is there and working, believe me.
3. Don't thank me. The thread is long enough already.

Anyone have any ideas about this card not working with a Dell Inspiron 8500? Everything boots and installs fine, but when trying to connect to a network the card keeps thinking that the wireless is off.

i have the same problem as jmedina98 who wasn´t able to fix the 1802 error on his thinkpad R32:

i have bought a 54mbit w-lan card (mini-pci) for my thinkpad r32.
it is "medion" brand.

as expected, after installing the card and switching on my thinkpad, the error 1802 appeared.

i then removed the card and made a bootable cd-rom using nero.

then i was able to boot to dos (candera dr-dos) and run the no1802.com cmos patch.

after re-installing the card and turning on the thinkpad the 1802 error appeared again.

can anybody help? maybe the R32 needs another CMOS patch?

thanks in advance and regards,

andy

Hey

I have read all the comments and advice in this forum about wireless mini pci and IBM.
I have followed the instructions. I Bought a mini pci 2100 3B.
I have used the advice about no.1802.exe and it works.

BUT: I cant get no signal and if I place my R40 rigth to the Zyxel Zyair B1000 I get the message that the signal strength is 2.0 Mbps.
If I walk just one meter away, I have no signal

Can anyone please help?

Sorry about my english
