BTW, you can get a larger TV for that $ if you stay away from plasma.

I'd be interested to see where? Larger than a 37" for $999 shipped? I couldn't find any 37's that were under $1200...

You would have to go with CRT rear projection. While bulky, they do offer the best black levels and are ideal for darker rooms like bedrooms and home theators.

I know of a few good units over 50" that are under a grand.

Get most plasmas and DLPs in a dark room and watch the blacks become washed out gray, while a CRT based unit will have inky true blacks.

I've never heard of that brand but that looks to be one hell of a TV for the price.

Yeah, I bought a refurb'd Viewsonic 32" LCD TV from Frys/Outpost last month and I love it. Now they have this one with a built-in tuner. I'm going through all the reviews right now b/c my dad wants to get it. Everything looks good so far, and you know that those AVSForum guys have a hard-on for good quality.

I have a 26" Olevia LCD in the bedroom that doubles as my PC monitor. It's almost a year old and at the time Olevia was the best price/performance unit out there. I don't watch much TV in the bedroom and the upgrade was from a 20" CRT so I'm still very happy with it.

Considering he'll have it in the bedroom I'd assume it'll be dark while he's watching TV, meaning all the colors are going to look washed out.

I know people say contrast ratio ratings mean nothing, but 1600:1 to 800:1 is a large difference.

My Viewsonic is 800:1 and I have no problems with washed out colors (it's in my bedroom).

The TV would look much better without it.

Yeah, I thought about that, but the 42" is $500 more. I'd probably use the speakers for normal TV viewing though...

The 42inch is 1300 at amazon

Yeah, I think the Olevia is a better model for the the extra $300. I'm not a specs whore either, but the contrast ratio is quite different, and I supect the Olevia has more inputs...

That's the older model...glass in front of the screen though. The 542i is the equivalent 42" to the 537H.

I was checking out this Panasonic...

Panasonic DVD-S52K

Don't get that.

Get the Toshiba HD-A1 HD-DVD Player, you will thank me later!

Another few months of patiently waiting.

Yeah...I saw that. I've just heard of more problems with the Westy's, and their support can be horrible from what I read on the AVS Froums. Also, the contrast ratio on the Westy wasn't as good, and it's a 12ms display.

Looks like a nice monitor though...

Anything more specific than "you will thank me later?"

Picture quality is stunning, and it's the best upconverting player on the market. If you have a good HT system, you can take advantage of the TrueHD tracks on some of the HD-DVDs. The price fluctuates from 350-400 bucks, but you will be good for the forseeable future with this.

32" Olevia from Target for $540 + tax (free ship) in hot deals right now. Just picked one up. Was thinking 37", but for the bedroom I thought 32 was enough and the price was right.

I saw that but no HD tuner/QAM kills it for me.

Price wise it's SUPER hot though.

I've had mine for a few weeks now, have updated the firmware (very cool), and I've been loving it. I still haven't seen any real HD content on it yet, but I have been surprised how good SDTV looks...even when stretched to fit the screen. Hockey is so meant for the WS too.

The closest I have been to watching HD content is the upscaled DVD's from my Oppo DVD player. I can't tell much of a difference quality-wise between 720P and 1080i, so I use 1080i for DVD's since it seems to fill the screen more than 720P on 1:1. I also picked up a HDMI --> DVI cable from Monoprice, and hooked up my gaming system to it and it was GORGEOUS. My system is on the other side of the room though, so it's not really feasible to use it as a monitor now.

I just need to decide on if I want to stick with DTV for HD and work over their retentions department for the best deal, or wait until Comcast fully takes over Adelphia in my town and go with them. From my understanding cable generally has the best HD stream since it's uncompressed, and they have a solid line with plenty of BW to your house, while the satellite providers compress it. However, from what I've seen Comcasts HD boxes are buggy, and prone to freezing, and if it's the same as Adelphia was, their normal SD channels are crappy wuality compared to DTV.

Oh well, I'll figure it out sometime...

:)

Edit:

I have the 37" 537H, not the 32" non-tuner model.

:)

I already have a DLP (living room) & LCD (bedroom). This TV would be for my work, no HD tuner does kill it for me too because at home I have Comcast Cable & Two Boxes... but at work I would like to use the Tuner/QAM with an antenna.
